DID YOU KNOW? — FLATBED VS. DRY VAN

To most people, trucking is trucking.

But ask a driver and they'll tell you: pulling a flatbed is a whole different job than bumping docks with a dry van.

📦 DRY VAN
Freight is enclosed and protected inside the trailer. Once it's loaded and the doors are shut, the trailer does most of the protecting.

⛓️ FLATBED
The DRIVER becomes a major part of the freight securement system.

Depending on the load, a flatbed driver may need to:

🔹 Determine the proper working load limits
🔹 Choose the correct chains, binders or straps
🔹 Properly distribute and secure the load
🔹 Tarp and protect freight from the elements
🔹 Recheck securement after getting on the road
🔹 Adjust securement as conditions require

And flatbed freight isn't always a nice, square pallet.

It can be steel, lumber, machinery, oversized equipment, precast concrete or something you've never hauled before.

That's why experienced flatbed drivers don't just drive the truck — they have to understand the freight they're hauling.

There's an art to doing flatbed right.

School is starting back up, which means more buses, more kids, more bikes, and more traffic on our roads.

To all of our professional drivers: please be extra cautious, especially during the morning and afternoon hours.

🚸 Watch closely around school zones and crosswalks
🚌 Be prepared for school buses making frequent stops
🛑 Never pass a school bus with its stop arm extended
👀 Expect the unexpected — kids may enter the roadway suddenly
🚛 Give yourself extra following distance and time to react
📵 Eliminate distractions and keep your eyes moving
