You do have rights if it happens to you. I can't imagine paying for business/first class and being downgraded with only 40% refund.

Probably these rulings will not affect most of us but still good to know who to contact

"Oh yes, I would love to pay $30 for the worst seat on the plane, how'd you know?"

That's what one passenger posted after screenshotting American Airlines charging extra for a middle seat in the last row — right next to the bathrooms.

This isn't a premium seat. It's not extra legroom. It's the seat every experienced traveler actively avoids.

So why would anyone pay for it?

Because American Airlines bumped 14,758 passengers off their flights last year — more than every other U.S. airline combined. If you booked Basic Economy and didn't pay for a seat in advance, you're first in line to get kicked off an oversold flight.

Meanwhile, Delta involuntarily bumped exactly zero passengers. Southwest bumped 226. United, 309.

American bumped 14,758.

So that $30 isn't really buying you a seat. It's buying you protection from an airline that oversells flights and then charges you to survive the consequences of their own policy.

Passenger Colonel Mongke said it best.

And honestly? He's not wrong.

Would you pay $30 just to guarantee you make it onto a flight you already bought a ticket for — or would you take your chances at the gate?

"Turn off your Bluetooth devices — or we're turning this plane around."

That's the announcement 190 passengers heard on a United flight to Spain Saturday night.

Someone's Bluetooth device was showing up as "BOMB" — and crew couldn't get it to go offline.

After multiple warnings, a final countdown, and a call from Chicago HQ, the pilot turned the 767 around mid-flight.

Emergency vehicles met the plane on the ground.

Passengers deplaned with only their phones and passports. K9 units swept the aircraft.

Everyone was re-screened by the TSA before being allowed back on — hours later, at 2:30 in the morning.

The culprit? A 16-year-old's Fitbit.

The FBI is now investigating. No charges yet.

Here's where people are split: some say the crew had no choice — you can't ignore a device named "BOMB" at 35,000 feet.

Protocol is protocol. And maybe you're right.

But 190 people missed connections, lost sleep, and got handed a meal voucher worth less than an airport beer — because a kid didn't rename his Fitbit.

What do you think — did United do the right thing, or was this a massive overreaction?

What always confuses me is that parents buy the ticket and reserve seats at same time. If flight has no tickets for family, then maybe choose another flight?

If the reason is the family bought the inexpensive Basic ticket where seats assigned 24hrs ahead, you know you are taking a chance so not other passengers fault who paid to have seat.

Sure I have traded a "like" seat to help a mom out as didn't matter & back then you didn't have to pay for seats!

Now, half the plane seems to be "pay extra seats"..

How do you feel?

A senator just decided that families who bought the cheapest tickets deserve YOUR seat.

Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) sent a letter to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy this week demanding the government FORCE airlines to guarantee children sit next to their parents — for free.

No extra charge. No planning ahead. Just show up and expect the law to sort it out.

Here's what that actually means for you: if a seat is available next to a child under 13, airlines would be LEGALLY REQUIRED to hand it over to the family.

Even if you paid extra to choose that exact seat.

Even if you booked months in advance to get that aisle spot away from the chaos.

The rule was originally proposed by Biden's DOT back in August 2024.

It has sat untouched for 18 months.

Now Markey is demanding Secretary Duffy finally act — the same Duffy whose department just quietly waived $11 million in fines against Southwest after they stranded over 2 MILLION passengers in 2022.

The same DOT that dropped requirements for airlines to pay you cash when THEY cancel your flight.

So let's get this straight: the government won't make airlines compensate YOU when they ruin your trip.

But they might just give away the seat you paid for to someone who didn't bother booking one.

You paid for your seat. You planned ahead. You did everything right.

Should that count for anything anymore — or does everyone who books last and pays least get to go first now?
