There's a specific two-hour window on every multi-generational vacation that most families completely mismanage — and it's why Day 3 always feels harder than it needs to.
It's called the Nap Gap. Here's the short version:
Between 1 and 3pm, two things happen simultaneously on almost every multi-gen trip: grandparents hit their natural afternoon energy dip, and toddlers need to sleep. Most families ignore this and schedule group activities right into the middle of it. The result is grandparents pushing through when their bodies are asking them to stop, toddlers skipping naps to keep up, and everyone arriving at dinner already behind on rest.
The fix isn't complicated. It's just intentional:
✅ Step 1: Remove all group obligations from the 1–3pm window
✅ Step 2: Use that window for the highest-energy kid activity (pool, kids' club, beach)
✅ Step 3: Give the adults actual downtime — including the parent who planned the whole trip
✅ Step 4: Design a 4pm reunion and protect dinner as the emotional centerpiece of the day
The memories don't get made at the excursion. They get made at dinner — when everyone shows up present.
I wrote the full strategy on the blog this week, including what to do when grandparents resist the rest window (common!) and how to adapt this for city trips vs. resort-based travel.
