Great time to book your summer getaway to Beaver Island. Experience the stunning beaches, locals who wave, and unplug for a few days.

The Midwest has a ton of islands, but we found the most serene, sparsely populated options that put nature first and offer a ton of outdoor activities.

From the Island Airways archives, a circa 1980-82 photo of the late Bill Welke (1922-2002) delivering milk cartons from Welke Airport to the Beaver Island Community School, with school mascot "Stubby" following behind. Bill was the owner and chief pilot of Island Airways, and also served as the island's Deputy Sheriff, among other roles.

Stubby was the third dog of that name raised by the Cole family, growing up at their home a few doors south of the school. He gradually became a fixture at BICS, lounging in the hallway and circulating through the building. Stubby became such a familiar presence there that his photo appeared in the annual school yearbook alongside BICS students, faculty and staff. He was eventually 'adopted' by the last two Dominican nuns to serve at BICS, Sister Marie Eugene and Sister Mary Roch, moving into their home at the nearby Convent of Holy Cross Church, where he faithfully kept them company in their elder years. There he was fed and pampered like a king, enjoying frequent rides with the Sisters who often let him "ride shotgun" in the front seat of their cream-colored Jeep Wagoneer.

This snapshot of an earlier island era captures some of the informal charm of daily routines from that time: the local pilot ambling into town in his trusty VW bus "The Beaver Bug", dropping off the daily allotment of small waxed cardboard cartons of milk for students (usually white milk but on Fridays the treasured chocolate milk variety), and the neighborhood Golden Retriever escorting him into the schoolhouse like it was the mascot's day job - which in a way, it was.

Great article about the recent Great Lakes Basketball Tournament on Beaver Island. Put in Bay, Washington Island, Mackinac Island and Beaver Island schools competed. It was an amazing weekend of basketball, new friends, shared experiences, and community. Go Islanders!

I expected Beaver Island to feel familiar. I live on an island too, after all. But from the minute the nine-passenger propeller plane got within sight of “America’s Emerald Isle”–a reference to its Irish heritage–on Dec. 12, it was clear that was not going to be the case.

Looking down at the island’s inland lakes and semi-frozen shoreline, I suddenly had a lot of questions: Do they have a clinic? A vet? One school or two? What animals live here? Is everyone related? Does everyone know everyone else? Is my phone going to work?

And the big one: what do they do in the winter?

These are exactly the questions people ask me about living on Washington Island and the questions islanders repeat to one another with an affectionate eye roll.
