Patchy fog is in tomorrow’s forecast🌫️🚢!

Before radar and radios, travelers and pilots used this massive "ferry gong" at Pointe-à-la-Hache. Made from a salvaged locomotive wheel tire with a cut bottom to make it ring like a giant tuning fork, it served two big jobs:
1. Ringing it called the ferry over when passengers were waiting.
2. In dense fog, crew members clanged it continuously so the pilot could navigate blindly back to the slip by sound alone.

The Port of Plaquemines is seeking an experienced, results-driven Chief Operations Officer (COO) to join our executive leadership team.

As one of the nation's fastest-growing ports, we are advancing critical maritime infrastructure, expanding operational capabilities, and strengthening our role in global commerce.
Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the COO will provide strategic leadership across port operations, marine logistics, ferry services, infrastructure development, security, and emergency response while overseeing a workforce of approximately 61 employees.

We're looking for a proven leader with:
- Significant experience in maritime operations, port management, transportation, or related industries.
- Demonstrated success leading complex operations, infrastructure projects, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong knowledge of maritime safety, security, and regulatory compliance.
- Experience in military or maritime leadership, operational excellence, or process improvement.

The Port of Plaquemines is helping power America's role in global energy trade—and that activity is delivering significant economic benefits close to home.
According to Venture Global, construction of its Plaquemines Parish LNG facility has already generated more than $500 million in sales tax payments to state and parish taxing authorities, with the substantial majority going to Plaquemines Parish.

That's revenue supporting public services, schools and community investments, even as the facility continues to develop.

From the first 81 miles of the Mississippi River to energy markets around the world, the Port of Plaquemines is making a national impact with local significance.

At the mouth of the mighty Mississippi River lies a community whose impact on maritime history reaches far beyond its shores.

For generations, Pilottown was home to the river pilots who guided vessels through the challenging waters connecting the Gulf of Mexico to America's heartland.
Immortalized in Mark Twain's Life on the Mississippi, this remarkable community endured decades of change before Hurricane Katrina devastated much of Pilottown in 2005.

Though the community was forever changed, the pilots' mission continues.

A friendly culinary rivalry is brewing at AAPA’s closing reception: Taste of Louisiana! We might be a little biased, but Commissioner Mitch Jurisich, Council District 8 Empire Pasta recipe is heads and tails (and 🦐) ahead!

That being said, we love sharing the table with our friends at Port Fourchon—their Alligator Sauce Piquant is no joke. Friendly competition aside, it’s always a privilege to celebrate the rich culture and flavor of Louisiana alongside our partners in the Five Deep Water Ports Collaborative.
