Just so people know why a Marine engine is so different than an industrial or an on the road engine. This is an intake valve out of a 22-year-old Yanmar Diesel that is being overhauled in our shop. As you can see, there is severe pitting in the valve. All the valves in the engine are like this. This valve would not have lasted much longer before the stem broke off and it destroyed the entire engine. People wonder why overhauls occur? Well it’s more often in marine engines. This is just part of the reason; the salt air is very corrosive and causes excessive premature wear on all parts of the engines. The other reason is extended run time at a much higher RPM depending on the vessel type, or excessive load on other types. Always keep up on your maintenance and have more in depth inspections done as they become older in age. Thanks, Carter
