BayGreen Mobile Pump Out

BayGreen Mobile Pump Out What can we say besides "You're #2 is our #1!"? We keep the SF Bay clean by offering dockside pump We also offer contracted services to marinas.

BayGreen is a proactive environmental company that focuses on clean water and reducing the overall impact of marine activities on our environment. We offer services to boaters to transport black-water (sewage) to appropriate treatment faciliites. We also are certified to service and install most marine sanitation systems and individual components. These services include vessel compliance inspectio

ns, maintenance and repair of existing pump out station infrastructure, installation of new infrastructure, compliance monitoring and reporting, and environmental awareness outreach for their clients. BayGreen's services are contracted by several marinas in the San Francisco Bay area, and we also work closely with San Francisco Estuary Partnership to promote clean water. We practice what we preach - reduce, reuse, and recycle. All of our workboats have been rescued from landfill, stripped down to bare hulls and rebuilt by our crew to an efficient "pump-out boat" configuration. Our pump systems are designed in house and utilize discarded pumps from heavy industry that have reached the end of their useful life. We weld, machine and rebuild the pumps to our purposes. All of our engines are ultra low emission and very fuel efficient. In fact testing has shown that a 35 ft powerboat produces the same emissions warming it's engines, motoring to the pump-out station, idling while emptying it's tanks, and returning to the berth as a single BayGreen service boat produces in 8 hours. During that time we can service more than 40 vessels. With these practices we reduce landfill, improve water quality, and reduce carbon emissions.

Down in the dark depths of the ocean and far away from air, plankton, sunlight, and photosynthetic organisms; oxygen is being produced--dark oxygen. This came as a surprise to a team of scientists and researchers surveying the ocean floor and its ecosystem. Up until now, it was believed that oxygen was naturally produced solely through photosynthesis via plants, plankton, and some bacteria that convert sunlight into energy and release oxygen as a byproduct. It appears that polymetallic nodules, rock-like formations composed of various metals, may be the source of this oxygen (image pictured above).

These nodules are highly sought after by deep sea mining companies for use in electronics as they are composed of metals such as manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, and copper–metals needed to make batteries. These nodules, like batteries, release a low level electric output that may be strong enough to separate the chemical components of water through electrolysis.

This discovery gives us further insight into how deep sea ecosystems function and survive, and raises more questions about the importance of protecting and understanding those same ecosystems.

Who’s that tiny mammal living amongst the Pickleweed in the marshes of San Francisco Bay?
It’s the Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse! This charming Bay Area native is uniquely adapted to living in the brackish world of marshes and estuaries. It is an excellent swimmer and climber, and one of the few land mammals able to drink sea water. Its diet consists mainly of pickleweed, an edible, salt filled succulent that thrives in high tide areas. This special Bay Area mouse is listed as endangered due to shrinking habitats and pollution, especially from sewage dumped in the bay. Thank you to all of our boaters who keep our bay clean through proper waste disposal! The Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse and its habitat are safer due to your actions!

Thanks to the US Fish and Wildlife Service for this wonderful picture.
