Mecosta Osceola Transit Authority (MOTA)

Mecosta Osceola Transit Authority (MOTA) Getting there starts here - we're saving a seat for you! Buses from MCAT and MOCAT were referred to as the CAT buses, using a tiger graphic as the logo.

In 1976, the Country Express began providing transportation to the residents of Mecosta, Osceola, Lake, and Newaygo counties, and was the first transportation system of its kind in the nation. The Country Express worked in cooperation with existing transportation services in the region, including the City of Big Rapids Dial-a-Ride and Lake County's TRANSPO system (now known as Yates Township Dial-

a-Ride) on an experimental basis for a two year period. Although the Country Express closed in 1977, the experimental service clearly demonstrated the need for public transportation in rural areas. Recognizing this need, the Mecosta Rural Transit (MRT) began operations in 1978 as an outgrowth of the Country Express. The Mecosta Rural Transit initially served the senior citizens and disabled residents of Mecosta County, subsequently expanding to meet the needs of all residents throughout the county and changing its name to Mecosta County Area Transit (MCAT). In 1983, the Mecosta County Area Transit expanded its service area to include Mecosta and Osceola counties, changing its name to Mecosta-Osceola County Area Transit (MOCAT). The Mecosta Rural Transit and the Mecosta County Area Transit operated under the authority of Mecosta County. Mecosta-Osceola County Area Transit operated under the authority of Mecosta and Osceola Counties. In July 2005, the Mecosta-Osceola County Area Transit was reorganized as an independent Transportation Authority which no longer operated under the authority of the two counties. The new Authority was named Mecosta Osceola Transit Authority (MOTA). Services provided include modified fixed route, demand-response, and contract transportation, with connections available to neighboring transportation services. Our mission is simple: "Providing public transportation services in a safe, effective, and affordable manner."

We had a BUS-load of fun at the Big Rapids Community Library today!

We read stories, learned some important bus safety tips, put the kids to the test with a few rounds of “Safe or Silly?” and had a great time exploring the MOTA bus!

A big THANK YOU to the Big Rapids Community Library and the famous Mr. Howard for inviting MOTA back for another Story Hour! We always love spending time with our youngest riders!

🚌 MOTA FAMILY DAY AT THE BALLPARK! ⚾️

Today, the MOTA crew traded in the buses for the ballpark as we headed to LMCU Ballpark for our MOTA Family Picnic and a West Michigan Whitecaps game!

It was definitely a HOT one! But we battled the heat, enjoyed some baseball, shared plenty of laughs, and had a great time spending the day together with our MOTA team and their families.

Days like today are a great reminder that MOTA is more than just a workplace - we’re a team, and our families are a big part of what makes our MOTA family so special. A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out and braved the heat with us! We hope everyone had as much fun as we did!

🎡The MOTA crew has parked ourselves at the Mecosta County Free Fair! 🚍

What a fantastic day in our community! Earlier this morning, we had a blast meeting families at the Kids Day Youth & Family Resource Fair, sharing information about how MOTA keeps Mecosta and Osceola Counties connected with safe, reliable, and affordable transportation.

But we didn’t stop there! Our team also rolled up our sleeves to volunteer at the Angels of Action Chicken BBQ. Let’s just say we learned that serving chicken is almost as rewarding as serving our riders… even in this heat!🍗🥵

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello, grabbed some MOTA goodies, and helped make today such a success. We love being part of a community that comes together to support one another.

If you’re at the fair this week, be sure to stop by and grab a delicious chicken dinner, thanks to Angels of Action!
