Yikes!

Update: mom and all 3 cubs have been seen together multiple times in the subsequent days and are doing well!

Incredibly tense moment tonight.
We’d been watching a boar grizzly moving closer to where Obsidian and her cubs were. For a while, they were on one hill and he was on the next, clearly following their scent. Suddenly, he realized they were right there—and took off at a full run toward them.

Obsidian quickly sent her cubs into the trees and bravely turned to face him. When he tried to follow them into the trees, she bolted away, luring him after her. He chased her along the mountainside until both disappeared from view. Moments later, he returned and went after the cubs again, with Obsidian close behind.

We later saw him emerge by himself on the far side, and others confirmed sightings of him alone. Just minutes ago, someone reported seeing a cub—then Obsidian and two cubs—further up the road. So we’re hopeful!

This is just one of the many dangers bear families face in the wild.

Such a miracle when the cubs survive! After so much heartbreak over 399 and cubs, this is a wonderful sight!

Super Mom with Miracle Cubs

There is no amount of excitement that I can convey with words of how excited I was to see that "Mini Mom (Obsidian) had raised all three cubs for 2+ years! An amazing feat for a grizzly bear that was known for not being a good mother when I saw her for the first time in 2013 with three tiny cubs. She lost those cubs so I only saw them once.

Then, the first time Mini was seen with these three cubs most did not believe that they would make it out in the world for more than a few days. The runt was so tiny and he had the most determined look on his face when he focused on eating while the two siblings played. Look at them now! Mom is a bit thin (we think she is around 19 or 20? And, one cub spends more time running to the trees than eating so I'm not sure how it gets enough calories to survive.

Bear 815 really changed up her routine with these cubs and wasn't seen in public as much as she had been with previous litters. There were a lot of happy folks who got to see these bears yesterday.

I might add that I have also seen Snow and her two, and 1063 and her three adorables. Oh, and Jam looks like a beautiful young lady now. I'm so blessed to be still telling the story of 815, Mini, Obsidian, 12 years later.

GOODBYE GRIZZLY 1058.
Yesterday, this beautiful grizzly was struck and killed by a vehicle along a highway in Grand Teton National Park. His name was Grizzly 1058, and was one of Grizzly 399's world-famous quadruplet cubs that were born during the winter of 2020. With the unwavering protection and nurturing from their incredible supermom, he and his three siblings accomplished the seemingly impossible feat of surviving to sub-adulthood, which we believe is the first time this has ever happened in recorded history of the Greater Yellowstone Area. For those 2+ magical years, the world watched in awe as these five remarkable grizzlies roamed the landscape of Grand Teton National Park, while experiencing many thrilling and sometimes stressful adventures. We snapped this photo of Grizzly 1058 just a few days before Grizzly 399 chased off the four cubs in the spring of 2022. He was 2.5 years old at the time. Like you and millions of people around the globe, we became very attached to these five special bears during those amazing years, so to hear such tragic news really, really hurts. They were known as "The Fab Five," and now only two bears remain. We honestly don't know what to say. So we'll just say goodbye... Goodbye our brave young warrior. Thank you for all of the wonderful memories. You will always be loved, and you will never be forgotten.
