When I started Kat's Pet Transport Service over four years ago, I never imagined how much I would learn about transporting animals safely.

Over the next several posts, I'd like to share some of those lessons with you—not to convince you to hire me, but to help you understand what goes into transporting your beloved pet safely, what questions you should be asking, and why the cheapest option isn't always the best choice for your puppy.

I believe every pet parent deserves to make an informed decision about who they trust with their family member. 💜🐾

Let’s jump in with PART ONE:
HOW KAT'S PET TRANSPORT SERVICE WAS BORN

*One puppy. One difficult lesson. And the beginning of something I never could have imagined.*

Four years ago, Kat's Pet Transport Service didn't exist.

There was no business plan. No established company. No idea of where this journey would take me.

There was just a phone call from my fiancé's sister, Tina, who owns Doubleday French Bulldogs.

Tina had brought a puppy in from Texas for her breeding program. The puppy was sent to her using a multi-stop pet transport service.

He was supposed to arrive much sooner.

Instead, he arrived SEVEN DAYS LATE
…and very ill.

What followed was hundreds of dollars in veterinary bills and the time, care, and effort it took to get that puppy healthy.

That’s when Tina called me.

“Hey, you don't mind driving. I need someone I can trust to deliver my puppies. Are you interested?"

And just like that…a little idea was born. ❤️

My name is Kathleen, but I've always been Kitty. We thought the combination of *Kat* and puppy was cute and Kat's Puppy Transport was born.

As I began transporting other animals, the name evolved into what it is today:

💜 **Kat's Pet Transport Service.** 💜

But here's the thing…

I had absolutely NO IDEA all those years ago what Kat's would become.

I couldn't have imagined the miles I would drive, the families I would meet, the lessons I would learn, or how much of my heart and soul I would pour into this business.

What started with a simple plan to help Tina get her beloved puppies safely to their forever home has grown into something I care about deeply.

Over the past four years, I've continued to educate myself, refine my policies, and strengthen my safety protocols.

Because **when I know better, I do better.**

Yes, Kat's Pet Transport Service is a business. I am here to make a living.

But at the heart of everything I do is a commitment to the animals entrusted to my care.

Their safety. Their comfort. Their well-being.

They are not cargo. They are not just another delivery.

They are someone's beloved family member, and I believe they deserve to be treated that way from the moment I pick them up until the moment I place them safely into their family's arms.

And that's why I share what I've learned.

That's why I continue educating myself.

And that's why I want YOU to ask questions when choosing a pet transporter, even if you ultimately choose someone other than me.

Because this isn't about convincing everyone to hire Kat's.

It's about helping people understand what their pets deserve.

And if there's one thing I hope you take away from this series, it's this:

Part 2:
Why Private, One-on-One Pet Transport Matters

When a puppy is leaving everything familiar behind, the journey itself matters.

A private, one-on-one transport means that puppy has one transporter focused on them from pickup to delivery.

No unrelated animals sharing the vehicle.
No multiple puppy pickups and drop-offs along
the way.
No unnecessary stops.
No being loaded into a van with a bunch of other
animals.
Instead, the trip is planned around that puppy’s
needs.

That means I can pay attention to things like:

🐾 How the puppy is behaving
💧 When they need water
🍽️ Their feeding schedule
😴 When they need rest
🚗 How they’re handling the journey
🧼 Keeping their environment clean
🌡️ Weather and road conditions
🚨 And recognizing when something just doesn’t
seem right

And there’s another piece that is especially important to me:

I know exactly who has been in my vehicle.

When I transport one puppy privately, I’m not introducing that puppy to a rotating cast of unrelated animals throughout the trip.

That doesn't mean a private transport can eliminate every possible risk. It can't. But it allows me to reduce unnecessary exposures and keep the puppy's environment as controlled as reasonably possible.

And that's really what this series is about.

I'm not telling you that you have to choose private transportation.

I'm asking you to understand what you're paying for—and what questions you should be asking before you put your puppy in someone else's care.

Because when you're trusting someone with a puppy who can't speak for themselves...
the journey matters. 💜🐾

Because sometimes the biggest risks aren't the ones you can see.

🐾 PART 4: WHAT ARE YOU REALLY PAYING FOR?

When you hire a professional pet transporter, it's easy to look at the price and think:

“That's a lot of money for someone to drive my puppy from Point A to Point B.”

But the price isn't just paying for the miles.
The miles are only one part of the job.

🚗 FUEL
Every mile costs money to drive. And it's not just the fuel in the tank. It's the wear and tear that comes with putting thousands of miles on a vehicle year after year.

🔧 MAINTENANCE
Oil changes. Tires. Brakes. Repairs. Unexpected problems. A vehicle that spends its life crossing the country needs to be maintained—and maintained well.

🐾 EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES
Crates, carriers, play yards, ground pads, grass potty pads, bedding, cleaning supplies, disinfectants, water, food and all the little things that make transporting a puppy safely possible.

And equipment doesn't last forever. It gets replaced, upgraded and added to as I learn more.

🧼 CLEANING & SANITIZING
When a transport is over, I'm not simply dropping the puppy off and going home.

Equipment gets cleaned and disinfected.

Laundry gets washed, rinsed, dried and sanitized.

Everything gets prepared for the next puppy.

That time is part of the job too.

🗺️ PLANNING

Before I ever pull out of the driveway, there is planning involved.

Routes. Weather. Road conditions. Rest stops. Puppy schedules. Feeding. Potty breaks. Overnight accommodations. Pet-friendly hotels.

And sometimes the plan changes because real life happens.

🏨 HOTELS
If a transport requires an overnight stay, there's another expense that gets built into the trip: the hotel.

And yes, there are hotel costs and often pet fees.

I'm not staying at the Ritz Carlton. 😂

But I'm also not staying at the Bates Motel. 🤣

I need a clean, safe, pet-friendly place where I can properly care for the puppy—and sometimes finding that place, especially when you're already several hundred miles into a trip, takes time and planning too.

Because the hotel isn't a vacation for me.

It's another part of making sure that puppy has a safe place to spend the night.

⏰ TIME
This one is easy to overlook.

You're paying for the hours behind the wheel.

But you're also paying for the hours spent answering questions, planning routes, organizing the transport, communicating with breeders and buyers, preparing equipment, cleaning afterward and making sure everything is ready for the next trip.

And then there's the part you can't put neatly on an invoice:

❤️ RESPONSIBILITY.
When someone hands me their puppy, they are trusting me with a member of their family.

That responsibility doesn't disappear because the puppy is sleeping quietly in the back seat.

I'm responsible for paying attention.

For making good decisions.

For adjusting when circumstances change.

For knowing when I need to stop.

For knowing when weather or road conditions aren't safe.

For doing everything reasonably within my control to get that puppy where they're going safely.

So when you look at the price of professional pet transport, don't just look at the number of miles.
Ask yourself:

What goes into those miles?

Because you're not simply paying someone to drive.

You're paying for the vehicle, the fuel, the equipment, the preparation, the planning, the cleaning, the hotels, the time—and the responsibility of having someone else's baby in your care.

And that's what you're really paying for.

The miles are just the part you can see. 💜🐾

🐾 PART 5:
THE WORK AFTER THE PUPPY ARRIVES

The puppy has been delivered.
The family is happy.
The tail is wagging.
The pictures have been taken.
My job is done, right?
Not quite. 😉

There's an entire part of professional pet transport that happens after the puppy is in their new family's arms—and it's a part you don't usually see.

🧼 THE EQUIPMENT GETS CLEANED
Crates, carriers, play yards, ground pads, bowls, bedding and anything else used during the transport all need attention before they're put away. I don't just throw everything back into the car and call it a day. Everything gets cleaned and disinfected so it's ready for the next puppy.

🦠 I TAKE CONTAMINATION SERIOUSLY
I can't know everything a puppy may have been exposed to before they came into my care so when a transport is finished, I approach my cleaning process as though I had transported a puppy carrying an infectious illness.

That’s why I use veterinarian approved Rescue disinfectant on all of my equipment.

Not because I assume that puppy was sick.
Because I refuse to assume that I know everything.

When I know better, I do better.

🧺 AND THEN THERE'S THE LAUNDRY.
Ohhhhhh, the laundry. 😂

This isn't a load of towels tossed into the washing machine and forgotten about.

My transport laundry goes through multiple stages of washing, rinsing and sanitizing, followed by high heat and a sanitary steam cycle.

Cycle one: pre-soak with bleach/heavy duty wash/
triple rinse
Cycle two: heavy duty wash/triple rinse
This ensures everything has been
thoroughly rinsed
Cycle three: steam wash/double rinse
Then into the dryer on high heat
Final step: 30 minute steam cycle in the dryer

Why?
Because clean isn't good enough for me when I'm preparing for the next puppy. I want to know that I've taken every reasonable step I can to keep my equipment clean and sanitary between transports.
And then everything has to be put back together, restocked and ready to go again.

🐾 BECAUSE THERE'S ALWAYS A NEXT PUPPY.
The work doesn't end when the puppy is delivered.
It ends when the vehicle and equipment are cleaned, disinfected, laundered, restocked and prepared for whoever comes next.

That's the part of professional pet transport you don't see in the mileage.

You don't see the hours of laundry.
You don't see the cleaning supplies.
You don't see the disinfecting.
You don't see the equipment being inspected, cleaned and prepared again.

You don't see the time it takes to make sure I'm ready to safely care for the next family's baby.
And honestly?

I'm okay with that.

Because this is what responsibility looks like when you make someone's puppy part of your job.

The puppy gets to go home.
I get to go home...

and get to work getting ready for the next one. 💜🐶

🐾 PART 6:
WHEN I KNOW BETTER, I DO BETTER 💜

When I started Kat’s Pet Transport Service, I had no idea just how much I would learn along the way.

I knew I loved animals. I knew I didn't mind driving. And most importantly, I knew I wanted to provide a safe, private, one-on-one transport service for puppies making their way to their new families.

But here's the thing about experience: you don't know what you don't know until you learn it.

Over the past several years, I've learned so much about animal health, sanitation, disease prevention, safe travel practices, equipment, and the many responsibilities that come with transporting someone's beloved pet.

And as I've learned, I've made changes.

I've added equipment, improved cleaning and disinfecting procedures, adjusted my travel routines, strengthened my safety protocols, and taken a closer look at the little details that can make a big difference.

Some changes came from research and education. Others came from experience, asking questions, and recognizing that there might be a better way to do something.

And I'm sure I'll continue to learn and make changes as time goes on.

Because doing something the same way simply because that's how you've always done it doesn't mean it's the best way to do it.

I don't claim to know everything. I don't claim that I can eliminate every risk or control every circumstance.

What I can promise is that I will continue to learn, evaluate my practices, and make reasonable changes when I know there's a better way.

This business has never been just about putting miles on a vehicle and delivering a puppy.

It's about trust.
It's about responsibility.
It's about recognizing that the little life in my care belongs to someone who loves them just as much as I love my own animals.

And that responsibility is something I take seriously.

Almost five years ago, I started this journey with one puppy and an idea. Since then, Kat’s Pet Transport Service has grown into something I am incredibly proud of—and I'm still learning every step of the way.

When I know better, I do better.

Not because I'm perfect, but because every puppy deserves my very best effort, every single time.
