Back to School Safety – Crosswalks 🚸
Drivers, stop well before the line and know your crosswalks:

* Parallel Crosswalks - This crosswalk is made of two simple parallel lines that indicate where the pedestrian should walk. When you see a parallel crosswalk, that means a vehicle can continue on its route once a pedestrian is at least halfway through the crosswalk. The parallel crosswalk is often used in common areas like four-way stops or high foot traffic areas. It is crucial for drivers and pedestrians to make eye contact in parallel crosswalks to ensure safety is achieved before the vehicle proceeds.

* Ladder/Zebra Crosswalks - The design is meant to make it easier for drivers and pedestrians to see the crosswalk where more visibility is needed. The design of a zebra crosswalk lets drivers and pedestrians know that vehicles cannot proceed through the intersection until the pedestrian is safely on the other side. These are used in school zones and areas with higher traffic volume or streets with multiple lanes to keep pedestrians safe until they reach the other side of the road. This is because it protects pedestrians, students, and crossing guards more effectively. Drivers must wait until the pedestrian is safely out of the ladder/zebra crosswalk before proceeding. Note: this doesn't just apply during school hours or when a crossing guard is present.

School is right around the corner. Buses will once again be out and about transporting students to and from school. Do you know what to do in these situations?

🛑DO I NEED TO STOP? is back in session and we encourage everyone to be familiar with the laws about what to do when school buses stop to pick up and drop off students.

🚌 If there’s a on a two-lane road that stops to pick up or drop off kids, vehicles traveling in both directions MUST stop.

🚌 If there’s a multi-lane road paved all the way across and a bus stops, all vehicles traveling in both directions MUST stop.

🚌 If a roadway is divided with a barrier or an unpaved space that's at least five feet wide, vehicles behind the bus MUST stop, but cars traveling in the opposite direction can proceed with caution.

Remember, this is not only the law, this protects the lives of our school children. We want every student to be safe getting to and from school. We ask for your cooperation to help make that happen. Please, be a !
