The Daily Lift: Today we were called in by Mountain Leisure Hot Tub to help carefully lift and place a swimspa. The unit was 18ft x 7.5ft, weighing 2,500 lbs. Given it's dimensions, their forklift couldn't navigate the unit through the bay door and onto the trailer. Up! Up! Lifting used it's truck-mounted HIAB knuckle boom crane to lift the unit and place it on the trailer for transport to the project site.

Rarely is a job straightforward and no two are the same. This lift was no different. Getting the rigging spaced and balanced took a little extra time, and extracting it from the bay door with only 2 inches of spare room on the width presented some challenges. At the offset angle of the crane and door, seen in the photo, bringing the cargo out required all three axis on the controls. With an older model hydraulic system, at required a soft touch and patience. Not an issue, just meticulous.

We slowly brought the unit fully free from the door, where it could be lifted higher and swung around to be placed on the 18ft trailer positioned next to our truck. Seems simple enough, but there are always considerations and hurdles to overcome. And with delicate cargo like this, not to mention very valuable, moving cautiously with safety in mind is always the first order of business.

In the end, well within our two hour minimum engagement, we were able to place the swimspa on their trailer with zero damage and 100% client satisfaction.

Today’s lift with the knuckle boom crane is placing AC units on the roof of Texas Roadhouse on Hendersonville Rd, near Biltmore Village. Didn’t know one was there? It’s tucked away up a switchback.

Flew the coop. Or at least lifted and transported the coop. This seemingly simple job required some custom rigging to lift a chicken coop located among some trees. Up! Up! New home construction on a Black Mountain mountaintop. Five steel I-beams, 22–27 feet long, up to 1,500 lbs each. Tight switchback road just to get the truck on site. And one beam that sat five feet beyond our crane's maximum reach.

We planned for it during the site visit — agreed with the homeowner that we'd attempt it on lift day, but only if it could be done safely. When we got there, we extended the boom fully, swiveled the beam until one end rested in its permanent seat, built a temporary stub wall to catch the loose end, then slid it the rest of the way home.

Five beams. One day. No incidents.

Every project is taken seriously, but some are just more important than others. It’s spring break here in the North Carolina mountains and it’s time to build a tree fort. We’re using the crane truck to lift heavy parts into place. It’s cherished father son time, and a chance to teach new skills.
