Our 2nd simulator! Featuring a force feedback stick, 3 monitors, and a portable PC. This will be used at high school events and such. Even as things cool down, we are still flying, and this is a great time to enjoy some soaring without the heat and crowds.

Under an overcast sky, we congratulate Daniel Rose on the occasion of his first glider solo flight. Daniel came to us as a licensed ASEL pilot, but he did have a glider logbook with one entry from 1979. So, now, 45 years later he is completing his training to join the ranks of soaring pilots. Way to go Daniel! Daniel is pictured here on the left with his instructor Mike Friedman on the right.

Congratulations to Dan Steinberg, our first student to solo in 2024. Dan started his training last fall in our demanding Schweitzer 2-32 glider, and has made it his mission to show it who's boss. Great job, Dan - now it's time to perfect your soaring and claim your license. Dan is pictured here on the right (dark t-shirt) with his instructor Mike Friedman on the left.

We tried our first Social Distancing classroom experience today, at Jersey Ridge Soaring. In place of our usual ground school at the airport for aspiring pilots, we presented our class on-line. Three instructors presented various aviation weather related topics. Paul Scialabba gave the main presentation covering how to get and interpret a preflight weather briefing. Kevin Martin discussed cell phone apps for keeping pilots up to date on various weather issues in real time. And Mike Friedman talked about weather, charts and websites specifically for soaring pilots.

We had 10 students attend the 2 hour session, and presenters and students alike seemed satisfied with the results. Jersey Ridge Soaring is planning on presenting on-line classes for both beginner and expert topics in the coming weeks until we can get back to the airport and resume normal operations. Please look for our weekly email newsletter for more information.

Say congratulations to Jersey Ridge Soaring's second new Private Pilot, Glider, certificate recipient this week. Leland Montgomery started learning to fly gliders in 1973! He has gone as far as soloing several times in the intervening years, but life has somehow conspired against his finally earning a license - until now. Leland's accomplishment is amplified by having taken his final flight training and the FAA exam in our Grob 103 glider (vs our usual Schweizer 2-33). The Grob is a higher performance aircraft and trickier to handle, and we usually only use it for advanced training. But he stuck with it and has developed some really fine stick and rudder skills which will serve him well going forward. Good job, Leland!

Congratulations to our very latest Private Pilot graduate, Ross Cluver. Ross proved his prowess in the Schweitzer 2-33, Jaws, to examiner Randy Rickert on Saturday. After completing all of the paperwork, Ross's first action as pilot in command was to take his wife up for a ride in the 2-22, Green Hornet, glider. Excellent job, Ross!
