Airport Director Carlos Laverty recently traveled to Washington, DC, for the U.S. Contract Tower Association Annual Conference, where airport leaders, federal officials, and aviation professionals gathered to discuss the future of the federal contract tower program, air traffic control modernization, aviation safety, infrastructure investment, and the needs of regional airports.

During the trip, Director Laverty met with Senator Todd Young to discuss several priorities affecting the Monroe County Airport. Their conversation included the urgent need to modernize BMG’s aging air traffic control tower, the potential development of a joint use terminal serving general aviation and Indiana University charter operations, the airport’s role in Indiana’s emerging drone initiatives, and the importance of developing airport property to support long term financial sustainability and regional economic growth.

Director Laverty also had the opportunity to speak with Congressman André Carson about the potential advantages and concerns associated with artificial intelligence in the air traffic control environment. They also discussed the importance of dependable federal funding for regional airports and the critical role those airports play in economic development, public safety, business aviation, and access to the national transportation system.

The trip provided an important opportunity to ensure that the needs, challenges, and potential of the Monroe County Airport remain part of the national aviation conversation.

Monroe County Airport Remains Operational Following Overnight Storm Damage

Bloomington, Indiana, February 20, 2026

Monroe County Airport experienced significant property damage during last night’s severe storm, which may have included tornadic activity. The airport lost electrical power for approximately three hours. During the event, several outbuildings were destroyed and multiple hangars sustained heavy to significant damage. Significant portions of the airport wildlife fence were also damaged.

No injuries were reported. An air traffic controller who was working in the control tower had to leave his position and take shelter during the storm but remained safe and unharmed.

Despite the damage, the airport remains open and operational.

Both the primary and secondary runways are open and safe for use. A small section of taxiway is temporarily closed while crews remove debris and obstructions. Airfield lighting systems were briefly affected during the power outage but have been restored to full functionality.

Crews and contractors were on site early this morning to begin repairs to the wildlife fence and to conduct a full assessment of hangars and other airport buildings for additional damage that may not yet be visible.

The Monroe County Airport team is working closely with local partners and tenants to restore facilities as quickly and safely as possible while maintaining normal airport operations.

While the airport took a hard hit, the strength of our staff and the support of our community remain stronger. Monroe County Airport has long served as an essential transportation and economic resource for the region, and it will continue to do so. We appreciate the patience and encouragement from the public as recovery efforts move forward and we remain committed to serving Monroe County without interruption.
