Folks, I’m reaching out beyond my immediate friend group. Jeffrey is an icon in our hometown. He has a golf cart and comes down to the oyster factory in Bluffton and helps folks launch and retrieve their boats from the boat landing. He’ll park your truck and trailer for you, or even back it in the water for you if you’re not that experienced. Most people appreciate it, and even give him a tip. Some folks (mostly not from around here) are ugly and say mean things to him. Jeffrey smiles through it all, regardless of not having many teeth to make his smile shine.

A lot of us have had fantastic advantages thrown our way in life. Jeffrey, not so much.

Mariners local to Beaufort, SC, take note!

TEMPORARY DEVIATION – LADY’S ISLAND (WOODS MEMORIAL) BRIDGE Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway - Beaufort River - Beaufort, SC

The Lady’s Island (Woods Memorial) Bridge across the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (Beaufort River), mile 536.0, in Beaufort, South Carolina, has an approved temporary deviation to operating schedule effective 12:01 a.m. on March 25, 2024, through 11:59 p.m. on September 29, 2024.

This temporary deviation will test an operating schedule to determine if a permanent change is necessary.

Under this temporary deviation, the Lady’s Island (Woods Memorial) Bridge shall open on signal; except that the draw need not open from 6 a.m. to 9:29 a.m. and 3:31 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, except Federal holidays. Between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except Federal holidays, the draw need open only once an hour on the half hour.

Public vessels of the United States and tugs with tows, upon proper signal, will be passed through anytime. Additionally, per 33 CFR 117.31(b), the drawtender shall take all reasonable measures to have the draw opened, regardless of the operating schedule for: - Vessels in distress where a delay would endanger life or property; - Commercial vessels engaged in rescue or emergency salvage operations; and - Vessels seeking shelter from severe weather. Mariners are urged to plan transits accordingly to avoid unnecessary disruptions.

So we did a thing this week. took delivery of their new 38’ Defiant Fire Rescue Vessel . This boat is 27,000 pounds of pure, sleek jet driven power. Yeah, that’s our DryDock lift under her. And, yeah, we’re super proud.
