The National Association of Senior & Specialty Move Managers (NASMM) has declared May 12-18, 2024 National Senior & Specialty Move Managers Week.

Senior & Specialty Move Managers assist adults and their families with both downsizing to remain in their current home, as well as the entire process of moving to a new residence. Move Managers specialize in helping their clients with the emotional and physical aspects of sorting through a lifetime of memories in the transition process, while providing them with effective options and resources to increase efficiencies and reduce stress. The theme of this year’s celebration, “The Art of Moving Memories,” underscores the hallmark of move management – helping client’s part with possessions without parting with memories.

“For adults who have lived in their homes for 30 or 40 years, it’s more than just a move. Most older adults making this type of transition need to downsize considerably,” said Robin Meyerowitz, President of A Time To Move and Board Member of the National Association of Senior & Specialty Move Managers (NASMM). “The organizational and physical tasks - whether you are moving or downsizing to stay in the home - can be overwhelming. Families need a professional to provide them with the necessary tools to essentially reduce the stress that can accompany this type of move – and that’s exactly what we do!”

A Time To Move has been a member of NASMM since September 11, 2013. For more information, please contact A Time To Move at (561) 336-5926, or at [email protected].

Decluttering, Organization, and Older Adults

An essential step towards home organization is decluttering the environment. Most of us tend to hold onto objects we no longer really use, need, or even want longer than we should. But older adults have had longer to accumulate possessions, and anyone helping them with home organization may encounter resistance to the decluttering process.

It is essential to acknowledge that many people can be sensitive about their belongings. Possessions often hold sentimental value or evoke memories, making it challenging to let go. Discussing the importance of organization in a compassionate and understanding manner can help ease concerns and encourage well-being.

Offering reassurance that the sentimental value of belongings can still be cherished is crucial. A picture of a treasured object, for example, takes up little space but can evoke many of the same emotions if the physical object finds another home. Preserving important memories in photos or a tabletop book, or electronic frame ensures memories can be shared with family and friends without taking up too much space.

It may help to bring in a professional who has experience in helping seniors organize, declutter, and create a better space for themselves. And it may create a more enjoyable experience for everyone, too!

Organization and the Older Homeowner

Home organization is a good thing, especially for an older person.

As individuals age, maintaining an organized and clutter-free household becomes increasingly essential. Proper organization can significantly increase the safety and well-being of older adults and minimize the risk of accidents or injuries. Clutter is actually potentially hazardous, as it obstructs parts of rooms and creeps into pathways to create a tripping hazard.

A Time To Move are experts at de-cluttering, even for those not thinking of moving. And as a proud member of the National Association of Senior and Specialty Move Managers (NASMM), the experts at A Time To Move have the experience, know-how, sensitivity and understanding of the unique concerns of older adults and their home environment.
