🏰 The church dates back to the 11th century, making it one of Southampton’s oldest surviving buildings.
⚓ Its location in the Old Town connects it to centuries of maritime history, when Southampton was a bustling medieval port.

Remarkably, St Michael’s survived the devastating bombing of Southampton during the Second World War, while much of the surrounding city was damaged or destroyed.

From medieval merchants to wartime survival, these ancient walls have witnessed extraordinary chapters of Southampton’s history.

SOUTHAMPTON’S DUKE OF WELLINGTON: A PUB WITH A 800-YEAR STORY!

If these old walls could talk, imagine the stories they’d tell! 🇬🇧

Tucked away on Bugle Street in Southampton’s Old Town, the Duke of Wellington pub has a history stretching back almost 800 years!

**Here are some fascinating facts:**

🏰 **Around 1220:** The foundations and cellars date back to a house built by Benedict Ace, one of Southampton’s earliest known mayors.

⚔️ **1338:** A French raid caused serious damage to the original house, but its story wasn’t over!

🍺 **Around 1494:** Brewer Rowland Johnson incorporated the remains into a new building called *Bere House*.

🚢 **From shipwrights to soldiers:** The pub was later known as the Shipwrights’ Arms, reflecting Southampton’s strong maritime connections.

🏆 **1815 — Enter the Duke!** After the famous Battle of Waterloo, the pub took the name of Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, who helped defeat Napoleon alongside Prussian forces led by Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher. Wellington later served twice as British Prime Minister!

💥 **Surviving the Blitz:** The building suffered severe damage during the Second World War and was carefully restored in 1962–63, preserving its historic character.

🏛️ Today, the pub is a **Grade II listed building**, recognised for its special architectural and historic interest.

Underneath the building are medieval foundations, while above is a building connected to centuries of Southampton history — from medieval mayors and Tudor brewing to Napoleon’s defeat!

**A few fascinating facts:**
📅 Construction began in 1931, but World War II delayed its completion until 1950.
🧱 Its distinctive red-brick design features two towering square towers that dominate the city skyline.
🎨 Inside, the grand halls are decorated with murals depicting Norwegian history, culture, everyday life, and the country’s struggles during World War II.
🏆 Every December 10, the building hosts the **Nobel Peace Prize ceremony**, celebrating people and organizations working toward peace around the world.

🇳🇴 900 Years of History in Stavanger!

Stavanger Cathedral dates to around 1125 AD and is Norway’s best-preserved medieval cathedral still in continuous use!

✨ Built in Anglo-Norman Romanesque style, with Gothic additions.
🔥 Damaged by a major fire in 1272.
🪵 Its pulpit features intricate carvings from the 1650s.

🇳🇴 Gamie Stavanger: Where History Meets Fairytale Charm!

Forget time machines….a stroll through Gamle Stavanger (Old Stavanger)** is the next best thing! This looks like a fairytale village with cobblestone streets, tiny gardens, and rows of beautiful white wooden houses that makes this one of Norway’s most charming historic neighborhoods.

A few fascinating facts:

🏠 173 historic wooden houses! Most date from the 18th and 19th centuries, making this one of Europe’s best-preserved wooden house settlements.

📜 After World War II, some people wanted to replace the old wooden houses with modern buildings. Thankfully, preservation efforts won out, and this historic gem survived!

🐟 Sardines put Stavanger on the map! In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the city became a major center for fish canning. The industry helped shape Stavanger’s economy and its working-class history.
