I’d like to address something that I believe is important for anyone hiring private transportation.
When you hire someone to transport you, your family, or your friends, price is important—but so are safety, proper registration, and insurance.
In Massachusetts, vehicles used to transport passengers for hire generally have specific registration and insurance requirements. Rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft operate under a different framework than traditional private black car and livery services.
Properly operating a livery vehicle means carrying commercial insurance with substantial liability coverage. That insurance can cost thousands of dollars each year, but it is there for a very important reason: protecting passengers if an accident or injury occurs.
I often see transportation advertised in community groups at prices significantly lower than what established professional transportation companies typically charge. Sometimes there is no photo of the actual vehicle being used and, more importantly, no clear indication of how that vehicle is registered or insured.
As a consumer, don’t be afraid to ask questions:
• Is the vehicle properly registered to transport passengers for hire?
• Does the operator carry the appropriate commercial/livery insurance?
• Can they provide proof of current insurance if requested?
A professional transportation provider should be willing to answer reasonable questions about their vehicle, registration, and insurance. If someone becomes evasive when you ask about these things, that is information worth considering before trusting them with your transportation.
Private black car service is not always the least expensive transportation option, and there is a reason for that. Professional operators have expenses associated with commercial insurance, proper registration, vehicle maintenance, safety, and running a legitimate and sustainable transportation business.
Saving money is important, but when you’re putting yourself or your family in someone else’s vehicle, knowing who is driving you—and whether they are properly insured—is just as important.
