From 1908-1917, public transit continued to expand both underground with subway tunnels and above with elevated railways, forming the foundation of today's rapid transit lines. Watch Part 2 of our History of the T series as we count down to our 130th anniversary celebration in 2027.

We're modernizing the MBTA Commuter Rail's Newtonville station to be fully accessible to all riders. This fall, we plan to begin early action work including site prep, utility relocation, and retaining wall installation. This will lay the foundation for the future fully-accessible station with two high-level side platforms, elevator and stair connections from the Washington St sidewalk, and elevator and stair connections between the station platforms.

“I am pleased to see so many enroll on Day 1 in our new Car-Free Seniors Program, giving people who can no longer drive or choose not to drive the ability to still travel using mass transportation. This successful launch underscores how important access to safe, reliable, and affordable travel opportunities are to the public,” said Interim Secretary of Transportation and MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng. “Under the Healey-Driscoll Administration, we continue to prioritize upgrades and improvements in every area of our system, including new fare programs that keep people moving. Our senior riders are important to us, and I thank our new enrollees for trusting the MBTA as their preferred mode of travel for everywhere they need and want to go.”

Over 500 users successfully enrolled on the first day of our Car-Free Seniors pilot program. Learn more about the successful launch at https://www.mbta.com/news/2026-10-14/over-500-users-successfully-enrolled-first-day-mbta-car-free-seniors-pilot-program

“Real time travel information is something that the public relies on to make informed decisions and to make public transportation easier to use. The MBTA Go app that we launched in 2024 is my go-to, and now ferry riders can use it too,” said Interim Secretary and MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng. “I want to thank the MBTA’s Transformation & Technology and ferry operations teams for this upgrade that will serve many riders and connect water transportation to our other modes. It’s our hope that with more clear communication our riders will have less stress in their busy day as they plan their journeys on land or on the water.”

Real-time information is now available for ferries on the MBTA Go app and on our website: https://www.mbta.com/news/2026-10-08/live-tracking-now-available-mbta-ferries
