This week, the transportation sector in Ecuador went on strike. Apparently almost all roads to and from Quito and to the airports etc are blocked. The government took away gas subsidies which made the cost skyrocket and out of reach for people to buy. Now residents are protesting by blocking roads. I dont know much about it beyond this.
Why am I posting this on a flower page? Because a huge percentage of flowers coming in to the United States comes from Equador. This strike means that growers cannot bring their products to the airport, which is tricky because we all depend on flowers shipping on time.
I'm saddened that a possible flower shortage is *only* reason I have heard about this crisis. Essentially only because it affects how Americans get flowers. How selfish of us. Knowing about and caring about others and their struggles makes us better humans. There are dozens of humans connected to every rose placed into a bouquet. I'm not sure there is anything I can do in this moment, but I can continue to educate myself so that is where I will start.
