Good morning Coggers! It's hard to believe, but September (and with it, Fall foliage season) is (gulp) right around the corner! After September 25, our very popular (but somewhat slower) steam trains need to make way for our very busy diesel service to the summit. That means that from 9/26 thru 10/12, the steamers will revert to multiple 90 minute round trips up to Waumbek Station (4000') 7 days a week.

To compensate, we are once again expanding our normal pre-foliage steam service to the summit! Beginning Wednesday, August 19, we'll be offering 2 steam trips daily (8:45 and 2:45 every day except Mondays) until Friday, September 25. Schedule, tickets and much more at thecog.com

And of course, none of this affects our hourly diesel service to the top of New England until October 26, when Old Man Winter closes the summit and pushes even the diesels down to Waumbek every day for the long winter.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of 9/11, a day that continues to resonate across generations. This September, two pillars of light will rise from the highest peak in the Northeast as a tribute to the lives lost, the first responders who answered the call, and the veterans whose courage continues to protect our communities.

Clear conditions should make the lights visible to communities throughout the North Country. But for 2 nights only, September 11th and 12th, we'll be running special evening trains to the summit of Mount Washington to witness the tribute first-hand. Seats are limited, visit thecog.com for tickets and more information. And for every ticket sold, we'll donate $9.11 to Honor Summit, the event organizer. To learn more, visit honorsummitnh.org

Good afternoon Coggers and do we have some historic news to share with you today! With her check run successfully completed this morning, Erica Scales has officially qualified as our first–ever female diesel engineer! Erica is a full time school teacher who has been spending her summers with us as a brakeman for many years. Now, as an engineer, she's mastered the operation from both ends of the train, and will be helping fill out the crew roster on weekends thru the busy Fall season.

And coincidentally, Erica was one-half of our first-ever all female train crew today, and even more congratulations are in order! Over the weekend, Erika's brakeman Kate Reardon (also a schoolteacher and a long time regular presence here) competed in the Jigger Johnson Ultra, a torturous 58 mile race across 9 mountain peaks and 16,000 feet of elevation gain. And she did it in 22 hours and 42 minutes which, not surprisingly, placed her 4th in her age group and 6th overall in the female division!

If you see either of these badasses up here, high-fives are definitely in order! Congrats, Erica and Kate!

Good morning Coggers– thought you'd appreciate a little Thursday morning steam fix! After Trainmaster Josh pointed Engineer Ray in the right direction while Fireman Cookie flexed his coal-shoveling muscles, MW9 was off and running to the summit in a cloud of steam and smoke. Just a reminder that you can experience old-school railroading like this on Mount Washington twice a day, at 8:45 and 2:45, Thursdays thru Sundays! Schedule, tickets and much more at thecog.com

Good Friday morning, Coggers! Yesterday, a significant milestone was achieved by our Senior Engineer, Phil Beroney: thirty years of service at The Cog! General Manger Ryan Presby surprised the anniversary boy with a sheet cake, a coffee mug, a "Well Done" thingamajig, and a hearty handshake for the grip-n-grin shot in front of Phil's beloved M3. When asked to sum up his three up and down decades on Mount Washington in a word or two, Phil thought for a moment before responding, with typical understated eloquence, "I really can't think of anything". Wow, Phil. Just wow, and well said. Congratulations, and thanks!
