Brooklin Boat Yard

Brooklin Boat Yard Internationally renowned wooden yacht construction and restoration. Started in 1960 by famed yacht designer and boat builder Joel M.

Brooklin Boat Yard specializes in new construction of custom yachts (power & sail), restoration of classic yachts along with service, storage and sales of yachts of all types and sizes. White the yard is still family run, owned and operated by Joel’s son Steve White. Brooklin Boat Yard (Lat: 44/15/38, Lon: 68/34/36) is located along the shore of Center Harbor in the town of Brooklin, Maine. Center

Harbor is in the heart of the best cruising grounds on the coast of Maine as it is situated along the northern shore of the Eggemoggin Reach connecting the Penobscot Bays (to the west) with Blue Hill Bay and Mount Desert Island (to the east). Easy to reach by water, the yard is (being at the bottom of a peninsula) not quite as easily reached by land but well worth the effort not only for the scenic drive but also for the opportunity to visit the yard and see the exceptional boats built, restored and maintained right here. Brooklin Boat Yard is perhaps best known for its work with the design, construction, restoration & maintenance of wooden boats of both traditional plank-on frame construction and modern cold-molded, wood-epoxy composite construction. Working with wooden boats is a specialty of the yard but being a full service operation we are equipped and have the expertise to work with boats of all construction types be it wood, fiberglass, aluminum, steel or custom composites and regularly do so.

Yesterday, we took to the Reach to give Harper a test run and try out all the new bells and whistles she’s received since she’s been in the shop. The next time she hits the water, it’ll be with her sister ship, Dylan, another Eggemoggin 47+ designed and built by Brooklin Boat Yard. Dylan will be launching this summer.

It was a gorgeous Maine sailing day yesterday, and Harper performed beautifully. As you can see, it was all smiles among the crew, who’ve worked really hard to get these two boats ready for the upcoming season.

More to come on all the exciting details.

We are pleased to announce that we’ve received the Highly Commended Honour in the all new category of Yards & Harbours in the 2026 Classic Boat Awards. To all of you who voted for us, we thank you! We love this new category, and we are humbled to be included and recognized.

Thanks to Center Harbor Sails for this custom job!

They custom-stitched a wire chase made of sailcloth for Free Spirit. We gave them the dimensions, brought them some wires, and they made cut-outs for all the exits. The benefit? In the future, it will be easier to pull all the wires out of the mast.

We’re down south this week on a field trip of sorts, and we got the chance to swing by and check out their new facility in Bristol. What a treat to see behind the scenes with this cutting edge crew (literally and figuratively).

Here they are working on the rudder post of the new E47+.

Congrats to the whole Moore Bros. team on their recent expansion and new digs, and thanks for hosting us!

MEET THE MAKER | Gretchen Gara, Rigger

Some people find their way to boats. Gretchen Gara never left them. She grew up in Branford, CT climbing masts for her dad and his sailing friends — small enough, and brave enough, to go where others wouldn’t. That instinct to dive in and figure it out has followed her ever since, through five years as a sailmaker at , an associate’s degree and dual certificates from , and offshore racing that includes the Bermuda Race — which she’s set to sail again this year aboard Restive.

She joined the BBY team in fall 2025 and has been adding to her repertoire ever since. “I do something fun every day here,” she says. “Management is willing to listen. I feel very valued.”

For an employee-owned yard, that’s exactly the point — and Gretchen gets it instinctively: “If I have something to contribute, it makes a difference.”

Ask her friends what her favorite thing in the world is. They’ll all give the same answer: boats!

We had a great turnout last night with for the Alumni Reunion in the big shop! Thanks to TLS President Caron, Amy, and Laurie for making the trek up our way and to all of the alumni who attended.

We are so grateful for schools like TLS who work hard to keep these skills alive. Did you know that BBY has TEN TLS alumni working here everyday? Our alumni gave tours to attendees last night- it was great to show everyone around.
