Today, we celebrate National Aviation Day and recognize our connection to the early days of powered flight. In 1904, the West Virginia Spruce Lumber Co. was approached by the Wright Brothers to acquire some of the finest quality wood for their experimental flying machines. It is reported that the third Wright Flyer, which survives today on display at the Carillon Historical Park in Dayton, OH, was built from spruce cut on Cheat Mountain.

Today was a powerful reminder of what our airport is truly here for.

Today it became a critical hub for emergency response by providing quick access to fuel and operational support and helped keep lifesaving helicopters in the air.

The staff at Upshur County Regional Airport had the honor of spending the day fueling helicopters from the West Virginia Air National Guard and the West Virginia State Police as they launched search and rescue missions for those impacted by the devastating flood.

Our hearts are with every family, friend, and community member affected by this tragedy. We cannot imagine the heartbreak so many are experiencing, and we continue to pray for those still missing, for the safety of the rescue crews, and for strength and healing for everyone whose lives have been affected.

Thank you to the crews and all of the first responders, emergency personnel, and volunteers working tirelessly to protect and assist those in need.

Serving our community in moments like these is a responsibility we are proud to fulfill. Please continue to keep everyone affected by these floods—and those working around the clock to help them—in your thoughts and prayers. ❤️🇺🇸🚁

Kids ages 8-17 can take a free 15- to 20-minute introductory flight during Young Eagles Day on July 18 at Upshur County Regional Airport. Pre-registration opens Tuesday, June 16, with limited spots available.

Upshur County Regional Airport and EAA Chapter 842 are excited to sponsor a Young Eagles Day on July 18, 2026. If you have a child ages 8-17 that is interested in aviation we would love to offer them a chance to fly! Please see the information provided. Also note that preregistration is recommended! This is often a busy day and we can only take walk-ins as workload permits.
