It’s been a while…
Hi everyone this is Jeff Paxson owner of Marine Detail Specialists. The past 5 months or so has been quite a journey and I have not been able to post much. In April my wife, Brittani and I had a new baby girl, MJ. She was born premature and has spent 3 of the last 4 months at Seattle Children's hospital. Brittani and I were blessed to be able to have one of us there with her everyday. (See full story below if you are interested)
That being said it has been hard to find time and energy to post updates and info on our business page. That doesn’t mean that we things are not happening. We have an amazing team and everyone stepped up in a big way while I was pretty much out of commission for the last 3 months. The crew has kept our maintenance client’s boats clean and maintained with waxing and detailing and did some amazing work polishing out some really nice boats.
I would like to make a shout out to the whole crew who worked their butts off to get our clients boats ready for the season and to Loana in our office who made it all run smoothly.
I just wanted to give an update and thank all of you have reached out with prayers, well wishes and also Starbuck’s gift cards. (this is a hot commodity at the hospital)
There are some new things coming down the pipeline at Marine Detail Specialists that I am really excited to share with all of you! Stay tuned over the next couple of days for updates.
MJ’s Story:
In April my wife, Brittani and I had a baby girl, Marielle Joy Paxson. (We call her MJ) The first few months of her life have been pretty tough. She was born at 30 weeks and was overall very healthy for being 11 weeks premature. A few days after she was born it was discovered that she had a perforated intestine and she was transferred from UW to Seattle Children’s. Within 4 hours of discovering the problem at UW (Thank you Nurse Lorna you saved her life) MJ was recovering from emergency surgery, performed in her NICU room!
After 2 months of hanging out in the NICU to recover and grow MJ had another surgery to re connect her intestines. She did well with the surgery and we were sent home a few weeks later. Finally, home with our baby girl after 2 ½ months in the hospital! After about 2 weeks of being home it was becoming clear that MJ was not processing food as she should, she was throwing up a lot of her feeds and was in pretty severe abdominal pain. Back to Seattle Children’s we went.
The doctors were able to see that her bowels were very dilated and full of air, they just were not sure why. After 4 days of letting her body rest and not getting any food (very grumpy MJ) the doctors decided that it was harmful to continue to wait and see if the problem would resolve itself and they scheduled exploratory surgery. I have to say that is one of the harder things to stomach as a parent “Exploratory Surgery”, basically saying, “we don’t know what is wrong so we are just going to cut her open a 3rd time and see what we see.” That being said we had full trust in the doctors at Children’s and they did a great job of educating us and keeping us informed along the way. I am sure that we were not always the easiest to deal with in our stressed out and sleep deprived state.
I am happy to report that the surgery was a success. When the doctors went in, they found that she had scar tissue and adhesions from the original surgery. This was causing a blockage and not allowing waste to pass through. They corrected the area and re did the connection. After about a week her intestines started to wake up again and she was able to start eating.
MJ is eating well from a bottle although she does still need some assistance from a feeding tube for a few more weeks until she has gained some weight and stamina. We have been out of the hospital for a few weeks and have been able to enjoy some of the remaining weeks of summer. Along the way our 4 older kids, Natalie, Jack, Jeremiah and Jase were absolute troopers. They got shipped around to friends and grandparents and we had to miss some of their sporting events and they almost never complained. They love their little sister and are excited to teach her how to swim and ride a bike, take her intertubing behind the ski boat and a lot of other things they are all “claiming” to teach her.
