In a recent guest column, State Senator Paul Rosino highlights the findings of Oklahoma’s 2026 Aerospace and Defense Economic Impact Study and what they mean for the state’s economic future.

As Oklahoma’s second-largest industry, aerospace and defense continues to grow through investments in workforce development, aircraft maintenance, advanced manufacturing, and commercial spaceflight.

With $52.5 billion in annual economic impact, the industry is closing the gap on becoming Oklahoma’s largest economic driver.

The Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics and the Oklahoma Space Industry Development Authority joined legislators, community members, and local and state leaders, along with Dawn Aerospace, to break ground on a $7.5 million mission control facility and spaceplane hangar at the Infinity One Oklahoma Spaceport in Burns Flat. 🛠️👷✨

This project marks a major turning point for the state's aerospace economy, creating a home for Dawn Aerospace’s reusable, rocket-powered Aurora spaceplane ahead of its planned 2027 operations. Unlike traditional vertical rockets, the Aurora spaceplane operates like a standard aircraft—taking off and landing on conventional runways using rocket propulsion to reach extreme altitudes. ✈️💫

Project Highlights

▪️15,000 Total Sq. Feet: 5,000-sq-foot mission control and operations facility alongside a 10,000-sq-foot hangar.

▪️Advanced Infrastructure: Dedicated mission control, avionics and payload workspaces, a flight simulation office, conference rooms and supporting operational areas.

▪️Timeline: Construction is expected to be completed by fall 2027.

This collaboration leverages Oklahoma’s existing aviation infrastructure to provide rapid, lower-cost access to suborbital space in western Oklahoma.

With less than a week to go, Oklahoma is about to make aerospace history! You are officially invited to be a part of this monumental milestone. 🚀

Join the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics, Dawn Aerospace and the Oklahoma Space Industry Development Authority on October 13 as we break ground on Dawn Aerospace’s new mission control and operations facility at Infinity One Oklahoma Spaceport in Burns Flat.

Beginning in 2027, Dawn Aerospace plans to operate its reusable, rocket-powered Mk-II Aurora spaceplane from Oklahoma, using a conventional runway to support high-frequency suborbital flight. The new facility will serve as the operational home for those missions and help expand opportunities in scientific research, advanced manufacturing, national security and commercial innovation.

This groundbreaking marks an important milestone in Oklahoma’s growing space economy and the continued development of Infinity One as a hub for runway-based commercial spaceflight.

Oklahoma’s aerospace and defense industry made a statement today.

This morning, state, federal, military, industry, and business leaders joined ODAA at the Oklahoma History Center as the agency unveiled the 2026 Oklahoma Aerospace and Defense Economic Impact Study. It’s the state’s first comprehensive look at the industry’s economic impact in nearly a decade.

The numbers tell a powerful story:
✈️ $52.5 billion in annual economic activity
👥 250,000+ jobs supported statewide
💼 $16.6 billion in annual payroll
📈 Aerospace and defense remains Oklahoma’s second-largest industry and continues closing the gap on becoming No. 1.

Today was about more than the numbers. It was about the people, companies, military installations, airports, communities, and investments driving Oklahoma aerospace forward.

Today, the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics joined Joby Aviation at Will Rogers International Airport for a live demonstration of their J208 autonomous aircraft. ✈️

The fly-in event served as the Oklahoma stop on Joby's national Electric Skies Tour, highlighting the rapid advancement of next-generation flight technology. The demonstration showcased the modified Cessna Caravan aircraft, which recently achieved a major milestone by completing a 3,199-mile autonomous transcontinental flight across the United States.

The event highlighted Oklahoma's contributions to the future of flight, including its partnership with the State of Utah’s uFLY: America’s AAM Crossroads to the West coalition under the FAA’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP). It also underscored critical automated systems research at the local FAA Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center alongside the practical integration of supervised autonomy for commercial freight, emergency response, and defense logistics. 🗺️📦
