Yesterday, Prosecutors, legislators, and victim advocates gathered in the Bronx at a rally to urge Governor Hochul and legislators to pass the Deadly Driving Bill in NY (S3135/A174). Leaders have less than 30 days to pass this bill that will save lives. How many New Yorkers know that in order for a police officer to arrest someone in NY for impaired driving, they must name the substance causing the visible impairment? AND, the substance must appear on an outdated public health law list! So if a driver refuses to be tested or the drug is not on the list, police have no choice but to release the driver. It’s insane and NY is only 1 of 4 states left with a list. You can make your voice heard by sending a pre drafted letter to your representative at www.NASID.org/get-involved.

Show your support and urge to pass the “Deadly Driving Bill” (S3135/A174) by gathering on May 9th at the corner of Castle Hill and Turnbull Avenues in the Bronx, NY at 10:30 am. In New York, currently law enforcement can only arrest an impaired driver if they can name the substance causing the impairment and if it appears on the Public Health Law 3306 List. Some work weeks are just better than others. Had the pleasure of visiting 4 great highway safety offices this week (TN, KY, GA and FL) to spread the word on the multiple benefits of implementing a roadside oral fluid testing program. We had robust discussion in each state as each state strives to reduce impaired driving crashes, injuries and fatalities. As poly-substance impaired driving continues to rise, we need to arm our law enforcement officers with the latest technology to assist in building probable cause for arrest while simultaneously improving our data. Thank you Buddy Lewis and Jason Ivey (and team), Bill Bell, Leslie Kennedy (and team), Roger Hayes and team, as well as Lora Hollingsworth and your group. You are all taking steps to save lives. I’d be remiss if I didn’t also thank my traveling partners who are not only brilliant and dedicated, but are also a ton of fun. Love working with all of you. I’m a bit tardy on my NASCAR day 3 post. Spent last Sunday with the Delaware State Highway Safety Office at Dover Raceway for the Use Your Melon campaign. Watched Ross Chastain run a very good race to finish 12 th. Thank you DE SHSO for this vital campaign reminding motorists to use their melon by always driving sober.

Day 2 in Dover, Delaware with the State Highway Safety Office and Ross Chastain was even better than day 1. The Use Your Melon #92 car driven by Kayden Honeycutt ran close to the front and middle of the pack until he had some car trouble, but ran clean for 200 laps with 200 impressions to the fans in person and on tv of why we need to drive sober and arrive alive. I’m bringing earplugs tomorrow. Ended the day meeting and talking safety with over 300 fans and signing autographs at Grotto’s Pizza. An awesome day!!!

Day 1 of Dover race weekend in the books. Had a great event with the awesome staff at the DE State Highway Safety Office with Ross Chastain interacting with race fans reminding them to Drive Sober and Arrive Alive. Off to the track for another day after a morning walk on the beach. Dewey is a great little town.
