Houghton County Memorial Airport - CMX

Houghton County Memorial Airport - CMX The Airport serves to perpetuate that neighborliness. In September of 1948, over 20,000 people gathered for the airport dedication ceremony.

Michigan's northernmost airport that provides essential access to the national air transportation system for approximately 50,000 to 60,000 passengers annually within the four-county area of Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga and Ontonagon. The Airport was constructed through a co-operative agreement (known as the Canadian Michigan Exchange, thus CMX) between the dominion of Canada, the United States Gove

rnment, the State of Michigan and Houghton County. The planning and construction of the Houghton County Memorial Airport is indicative of the friendly association enjoyed by the two great nations for over 130 years. "Houghton County Memorial Airport is dedicated to the memory of those who served their country in time of war." On October 30, 1968, the Houghton County Airport Authority was established with the full responsibility for operating, maintaining and development of the airport. Soon after (1972-1974), significant improvements to facilities and infrastructure at the airport were completed. New Hangars, state of the art maintenance, a fire station, a new terminal and an Airport Industrial Park were constructed. On July 26, 1989, the Houghton County Airport Committee was formed and the Airport Authority was abolished. The Airport Committee was made up of 3 members of the Houghton County Board of Commissioners. Currently, the Airport Committee, serving under the Houghton County Board of Commissioners, is responsible for the operation, maintenance and development of the Airport. Since its inception in 1948, Houghton County Memorial Airport has come a long way. At that time, the Airport was comprised of a small terminal building, two light strength runways and a taxiway. Fast forward to 2013 and the existing runway configuration is capable of landing aircraft as small as a Cessna and as large as a B737. The Keweenaw is well known for its unpredictable and challenging weather conditions which is why a full Instrument Landing System (ILS) was installed allowing aircraft to safely land during bad weather. In 1972, a new terminal building totaling approximately 12,550 square feet was constructed and provides air service passenger facilities. Transient pilot facilities and several heated hangars are available for use. Currently, passenger air Service is provided by United Airlines via SkyWest Airlines with two daily non-stop flights to Chicago's O'Hare Airport. Royale Air Service provides seasonal air charter service to Isle Royal National Park while approximately 3,000 corporate, charter and transient aircraft use the airport annually. Cargo operations are provided by FedEx and UPS with more than 600,000 pounds of freight hauled in and out of the airport annually. The Houghton County Memorial Airport is approximately 2,400 acres and hosts a 204 acre Industrial Park with the necessary infrastructure and utilities ready for hookup. The airport serves as the gateway to the Keweenaw providing reliable service, capable of meeting the needs of the community, while providing a foundation for economic development and future expansion.

Over the past couple of weeks, CMX has been proud to host two great events that highlight how our airport serves the community in so many different ways.

🚒 The Tamarack City Volunteer Fire Department recently conducted training at the airport, giving firefighters the opportunity to practice emergency response in an aviation environment. We appreciate the dedication of these volunteers who continually train to keep our communities safe and prepared for any situation.

✈️ We also had the pleasure of welcoming participants from Michigan Technological University's Summer Youth Program, who experienced the excitement of general aviation thanks to several generous local pilots and airplane enthusiasts. For many of these students, it was their very first flight—a memory they'll never forget and perhaps the beginning of a lifelong passion for aviation.

A sincere thank you to the Tamarack City Volunteer Fire Department, our local pilots, volunteers, and everyone who helped make these experiences possible. Whether it's supporting emergency preparedness or inspiring the next generation of aviators, we're proud to be more than just an airport—we're a community partner.

🚁 A huge thank you to Lake Superior Helicopters for helping make Bridgefest 2026 even more exciting!

One of their helicopters will be based at Houghton County Memorial Airport (CMX) throughout the festivities, adding a unique aviation presence to this year's celebration connecting the cities of Houghton and Hancock. Whether you're attending Bridgefest events or simply enjoying the weekend, keep an eye out for this helicoptor in the skies over the Copper Country.

We're also excited to recognize several local pilots who will be conducting a flyover during the Bridgefest parade, showcasing their passion for aviation and their love for our community. Their participation highlights the strong aviation heritage of the Copper Country and adds a special touch to this year's celebration.

Events like Bridgefest showcase the strong partnerships, community spirit, and unique experiences that make our region such a special place to live, work, and visit.

We appreciate Lake Superior Helicopters, our local pilots, the cities of Houghton and Hancock, local businesses and everyone involved in helping create memorable experiences throughout the weekend.

✈️ Big day at CMX!

A total of 173 passengers departed yesterday on a Sun Country Airlines Boeing 737 charter flight headed to Laughlin, Nevada—an incredible turnout for our airport and community.

With a group this size, our team had to adjust normal operations to keep everything moving efficiently, especially with limited space in the holding area. It takes extra coordination, work, and flexibility to make a departure like this run smoothly.

A big thank you to our airport staff and TSA team for the work behind the scenes to keep things organized and on schedule. And we appreciate KRC’s logistical support in helping with the cargo.

Wishing all our travelers a great time in Laughlin—we’ll be ready to welcome you back on Saturday! 🌵☀️✈️
