Got bored during our Ohio winter!

‘1967 13 1/2’ Sea Nymph.

Had to raise the transom from 15” to 20” to host the motor of choice, w/trim.

168 lb hull weight.

Should rip!

In process..

The Convincor!Painted the motors and converted from 25” to 20”.

How about some fresh eye candy?

Been busy the last few yrs doing the homeowners (on 3 acres) thing and not much grinding of ports.

Did finally collect all the part to build one of these dinosaurs.

Been wanting one for yrs.

Grafting on this very rare Second Effort Hi Perf gear case.
Actually intended for a 6 but I got it to fit and should be fine if I’m careful.

A personal project.

Always wanted a 25 foot checkmate Convincor with twin outboards.

They offered them back in the day but the motors mounted on the transom and they had a splash well which eliminated the sun lounge that the I/O boats had.

My plan all along had always been to buy a Convincor with a blown up I/O so it’s cheap, then off load the motor and drive and put that money in the kitty to convert it to outboard.

About 30% through the process.
Have added transom knees and substantial reinforcement to inside of transom to handle the huge increase in load to the top of the transom from outboards.

Another negative to this conversion is the original 67 gallon gas tank is way too small to feed two big outboards.
Had a new 95 gallon tank built to address this issue.

The next major project is reconfiguring the cabin bulkhead and cabin door.
We weekend on our cuddy cabins so easy entrance to the cabin is paramount.
The OEM configuration had a small opening forcing you to crawl in on your hands and knees.
Duh.

This is why all the cuddy cabins you see for sale advertise the cabin was never used. What a stupid design error huh?
Evidence of non boat owning, bean counters designing boats.

I will remove entire helm along with bulkheads which are already out and reconfigure that entirely to allow addition of an entrance hatch that you open as well as doors to aid cabin entry.

Will be a huge project but in my mind will make the boat the way it should’ve been 30 years ago.

Another HUGE bonus to this conversion is bilge under the sun lounge where the car motor used to be will become a HUGE storage compartment.
We have done much traveling, exploring, vacationing by cuddy cabin from 19 to 24 feet in length and always take two fold up bicycles, beach chairs, grill for the beach, coolers, and a dinghy to get from anchor to shore and back to save dockage. Huge bang for the buck.

Love the classic offshore lines!

A personal project and one I've always wanted to do.

To me, and the type boating we like to do (get on Friday, get off Sunday, after going somewhere different every time), a Cuddy Cabin is the perfect boat.
A fast one....., just makes life right.

We've owned, restored, repowered two 24' Sonic twin O/Bs and absolutely loved what we could do w/them.

I always wanted a twin O/B mid '80's 25' Checkmate Convincor and just bought one.
Checkmate built most as single I/Os but did build a few twin O/Bs but they deleted the sun lounges to make from for a splash well.

For us that's bad cuz we want that sun lounge for storage.
In there we will store our:

2 fold up bikes
Beach chairs
Beach table
Beach grill
Cooler
$40 Walmart inflatable dinghy
2 anchors
Etc

So the answer is, find a clean I/O boat w/a scattered motor (making it affordable) and convert it.
You off load the I/O stuff to collect seed money for the conversion.

Here is the donor.

I'll either build (fiberglass) or have built (aluminum) an integrated swim platform/motor bracket.
Another bonus of this method is we get a swim platform.

At dock/anchor, we spend all our time between the sun lounge and swim platform.

100 lbs and 35 hp.
Sounds about right.

So we've been busy w/our move and closing the old shop and wait on the new one to be built.
Pending our Ohio weather, we're shooting for an early spring opening.

Took what I learned at the old shop and improved on it, including the full length lean to.
Will have painted floors and white metal walls and ceiling giving us wayyyy better light.
Yay.

So since its been a while..., I figured I'd post some pix's of a current project.
'80's vintage Wellcraft, 23' Nova getting a complete restoration.

Great customer who loves the boat and is willing to make an investment into it's and his future.
Upon the initial "tap test" we knew at least the aft section of floor would have to come out to get to the soft stringers and bulkhead I was able to get to.

Plan was for me to cut and grind until we got into good wood then stop.

I did that and ended up w/complete floor removal and all stringers to approx. 6' forward of transom.

The bad:
The boat has been restored twice before (very common) and although the glass work one the stringers was good....., everything else was pathetic!

The good:
Always liked these boats and after cutting into one, I like them even more. Really, really well engineered/laid out stringer/grid system.
This is the backbone of the boat. If it ain't right, no matter how thick the glass, it will flex and eventually brake. Remember too, on most smaller boats this is all under the floor where you cant see it.

For a 23' boat, once corrected, I'd take it anywhere.

I have more pix's if I can find them.
During the first restoration, they cut the floor into approx. 2' x 2' pcs which is normal to get it out. What I've never seen done before though is to scab it back together and reuse it! As in scraps of plywood screwed to the bottom of the floor, spanning all the cuts/seams.
Yikes!

During the 2nd restoration they laid a new floor OVER the old one!
Never seen that before either.

When looking for a shop to give a face lift to your baby, be careful as almost all of this is hidden by the floor.
As in, the new carpet looks good, seats are back where they're supposed to be but you have no clue what they put under the floor.

I photo document all of my projects and send them to my customer as the project progresses. This helps keep them up to speed and shows any surprises that may present them selves.

Bellow pix's show, a galvanized house nail sticking out of the transom where a previous shop used it to tack the new stringers together before wrapping them in glass!

The boat is an inboard outboard and one shot is showing the engine bed/stringer that a motor mount lag bolted to.
Previous shop sandwiched three 2" x 6"s and wrapped them w/glass. Huge voids (meaning zero strength) everywhere and everything rotted.
One shot shows it on a scale at I 55 lbs! Of water.
Times two stringers. Sun lounge was also water logged and hit the scales at 80 lbs!
And w/removing the 2nd layer of floor, we'll probably shave 200lbs plus off the boat when done.
On a boat, weight = Horsepower and gas.

Another shot is of a screwdriver sticking out of a previously replaced stringer at the end of the fuel tank. The other side didn't even have enough wood left to hold the screwdriver.

Here's a fun project I've been wanting to do for yrs.
A small, classic, fly weight, as in 180 lb hull weight, outboard runabout.
If that's not high enough up the cool factor, how about powering it with twin?
Found a very, very rare, '1956/57 14' Crestliner that came from the factory w/a wide motor board to accept twins.
Bought the hull a yr ago and just found suitable motors that we'll pick up next weekend.
'1957 35 hp Johnsons. Boat should be an absolute hoot to drive!
