Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii!
While staying on Oahu, we decided to squeeze in another island adventure! This time we hopped on a plane for a day trip to the Big Island, with one main goal in mind, exploring Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park!
We've visited quite a few National Parks during our travels, but this one was definitely different! After all, how often do you get to explore a landscape shaped by active volcanoes?
We traveled along Crater Rim Drive, stopping at the Kīlauea Overlook to take in the impressive volcanic landscape. We also visited the steam vents, where hot volcanic heat meets groundwater, sending clouds of steam rising right out of the earth. It's fascinating to see just how active the ground beneath your feet really is!
Unfortunately, the remote summit caldera area we had hoped to explore was closed due to ongoing volcanic activity. While we would have loved to see more, we certainly understand why safety comes first when dealing with an active volcano!
One thing that really struck us was how different the Big Island felt compared to Oahu and Maui. It seemed much more remote, with wide-open spaces, rugged volcanic landscapes, and a quieter atmosphere. Each Hawaiian island we've visited has had its own personality, and that's part of what makes exploring them so interesting.
Of course, trying to experience an entire island in one day is nearly impossible! We barely scratched the surface of what the Big Island has to offer.
Between our day trips to Maui and the Big Island, we've come to one conclusion we need to come back to Hawaii and spend a whole lot more time exploring!
For now, we're happy we had the opportunity to visit another National Park, add another stamp to our National Park Passport, and experience a little more of what makes Hawaii so special.
Have you visited the Big Island? What should we put on our list for our next visit?
