SBSO SHERIFF JAMES POHLMANN ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

With heartfelt gratitude and heavy hearts, we share that Sheriff James Pohlmann is announcing his retirement following 43 years of dedicated service to the people of St. Bernard Parish.

Chief Deputy Richard Baumy, who brings more than six decades of law enforcement experience, including 42 years with SBSO, will serve as interim Sheriff beginning Nov. 1 until a special election is held.

Sheriff Pohlmann joined SBSO in 1983 at age 18 and served in nearly every area of the department before taking office as Sheriff in July 2012. Re-elected without opposition three times, he has led with a deep commitment to the community he has always called home.

Under his leadership, SBSO expanded and modernized its facilities, technology, equipment and training, strengthened emergency-response capabilities, improved employee pay and support, and built lasting community partnerships. Through hurricanes, the pandemic and other emergencies, he guided the department with steady leadership and compassion.

His unwavering commitment to public safety has helped make St. Bernard Parish one of the safest communities in the metropolitan area.

“Serving the people of St. Bernard Parish has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” the Sheriff said. “This is my home, and the trust this community has placed in me for so long has meant more than I can put into words. Thank you for allowing me to serve you and for standing with me through the challenges and achievements we have shared.”

Sheriff Pohlmann, THANK YOU for the lives you have touched, the deputies you have guided and the countless ways you have served this parish. Your legacy lives on in a stronger Sheriff’s Office and the people who carry its mission forward.

Thank you for a lifetime of commitment to “Keeping St. Bernard Safe.”

Although you will be greatly missed, you have more than earned this next chapter. May the years ahead bring more time with your family and the freedom to enjoy all you have worked so hard for.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and members of the St. Bernard Port team were honored to attend the Annual Domestic Violence Luncheon, hosted by the Family Violence Program of St. Bernard.

The numbers are sobering: 58% of women in Louisiana have experienced domestic violence, nearly double the national rate of 1 in 3. In 2025 alone, 15,000 women across the state needed assistance.

Awareness is only the first step. Preventing domestic violence takes sustained work, and this month we're recommitting to supporting the people and programs doing that work in our community.

Throughout those years, she has been more than an employee - Karen has been an important part of the St. Bernard Port family, contributing countless hours, memories, and dedication to the success of our organization.

In fact, 34 years makes Karen the longest tenured employee in St. Bernard Port, Harbor and Terminal District’s history – a remarkable achievement that speaks volumes about her commitment and dedication.

While we will certainly miss seeing Karen around the Port, we are grateful for the lasting impact she has made and the legacy she leaves behind.

HAPPY MARITIME DAY! 🚢

This month, the St. Bernard Port celebrated Maritime Month through community connection, featuring a presentation led by our COO, Ross Gonzales, for the Nunez Community College Pelican Leadership Development Institute Program.

Maritime month is a time to recognize all the men and women who continue to keep this industry afloat. From deckhands to captains, from cruise ships to tugboats, the maritime industry keeps growing and thriving. We celebrate this day with a big thank you to those who wake up every day and work tirelessly to support and continue the success of this industry. ⚓

Last Thursday, St. Bernard Port employees volunteered at AgMagic on the River, a free, interactive, hands-on educational event held annually at Docville Farm in Violet, designed to teach youth about Louisiana agriculture and its connections to their daily lives. This event is hosted by LSU AgCenter and the Meraux Foundation.

Sherry and Lauren worked the stations featuring the life cycle of butterflies and bees!

St. Bernard Port publishes Economic Impact Assessment

The St. Bernard Port, Harbor and Terminal District has recently completed an Economic Impact Assessment. This analytical assessment determines how the port affects the economic activity of St. Bernard Parish.

“Findings from the report state that the St. Bernard Port, Harbor and Terminal District support a substantial number of jobs and income. It directly provides 1,415 jobs and $183.2 million in output.” The report continues, “Accounting for the ripple effects of port spending on suppliers and household expenditures, the overall impact is 2,267 jobs (indirect and induced), $201.7 million in labor income, $237.2 million in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and $332 million in total statewide output.”

This morning, Executive Director Drew Heaphy and COO Ross Gonzales participated in the Maritime Panel for the Leadership St. Bernard 2026 class at the St. Bernard Parish Hospital. St. Bernard Chamber of Commerce

The gentlemen have been invited several times to share their thoughts and perspectives on the industry from a professional standpoint, and always make sure to leave the class with as much information as possible.
