Rivanna River Company The Rivanna River Company was founded in 2015 as Charlottesville’s first paddlesports outfitting service.

Charlottesville's Riverfront Destination featuring River Kayaking and Tubing, Concerts, Wood-fired Sauna, and Riversong Cafe....a full-service coffee and tea destination. We started the company to share our love of playing in the outdoors and to help connect Charlottesville with its beautiful river. We are dedicated to making adventures on the water inviting and accessible to people from all backgrounds. We offer rental equipment, shuttle service, guided trips, and skills instruction for canoeing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. As we grow, we plan too add summer day camps, overnight river trips, outdoors skills clinics, and environmental education programs to our offerings. Our vision is a healthy Rivanna River enjoyed, embraced and valued by the people of Charlottesville.

Gallatin Canyon has been bringing us joy at the Rivanna River Company since 2018, when we had just landed in our present location, and our stage was a tiny deck pulled off a renovation job. With The Front Porch we’ve been proud to create a riverfront venue and concert series worthy of their talent!
We couldn’t be more excited to close out the 2026 Rivanna Roots Concert Series with these fine musicians, and what makes it even better is to have Mike Burris and Emily Morrison getting the evening going!

‘Speaking of Rivers’
Guided Paddling Trip on the James River featuring Horace Scruggs
Thursday, September 17th, 9 am to 1:30 pm

Rivers have always been vital to the development and commerce of many civilizations throughout history. And through much of the history of America this has included the labor and invention of both free and enslaved African Americans. With the personal stories at the forefront, this Rivanna River float will enlighten paddlers of the experiences and contributions African Americans had on Central Virginia’s rivers. This will include discussions on the American slave trade, local plantations, bateau and watermen, and canal workers. Come learn how African Americans navigated the river as well as the societal pressures of their times.
This beginner-friendly half-day trip introduces participants to the rural beauty of central Virginia rivers. Participants meet the guides and instructors in Scottsville, VA (about 30 min from Charlottesville). Beginner-friendly sections of the river are selected for this experience. Participants should expect to actively paddle their solo sit-on-top kayak for 3+ hours to complete the trip. A partnership between the Rivanna River Company and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UVA.

Here come some beautiful September days! The Rivanna is up just a little this morning, enough for intrepid paddlers or tubers to make downriver journeys, but still low water conditions in the grand scheme of things.

We are open for equipment rentals and out and back paddling, but are not running shuttles today or tomorrow due to continued marginal conditions for downriver trips.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Labor Day weekend!!!
