A $25 MILLION INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE OF CHATTANOOGA!

Today, CARTA announced the largest competitive grant award in our history: $25 million through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s FY2026 BUILD Grant program.

This investment is about so much more than autonomous vehicles. It’s about building the people, infrastructure, technology, and expertise Chattanooga needs to lead the future of transportation.

Here at Shuttle Park South, CARTA and UTC will create a permanent Mobility & Innovation Command Center to oversee and support the next generation of transit technology.

A new Live-Learning Lab will connect technology with education, giving students, researchers, and CARTA employees opportunities to learn and develop skills in autonomous systems, transportation technology, AI, data, cybersecurity, and more.

Building on the City of Chattanooga and UTC’s SMART Grant work and EPB’s technology infrastructure, this project will help create a more connected and innovative transportation system.
Most importantly, we’re not just bringing the future of transportation to Chattanooga and we’re preparing Chattanoogans to lead it.

Over the next three years, CARTA and our partners will build the infrastructure, develop the workforce, test new technology, and create expertise that can serve our community for decades to come.

Dolly's heart for our community rides right alongside us. Her Imagination Library bus wrap has carried her message of literacy and hope through the streets of Chattanooga, putting books into the hands of children who might not otherwise have them.
She once said books were the greatest gift she could give a child. Today, and every day this bus rolls through town, that gift keeps going.
