The posting of daily water levels has been stopped, this is the last update posted on Monday. The pumps have been shut down and most of them were removed as of yesterday. The river here at the marina has slowed drastically. We are just waiting on weather to cooperate to start launching boats. The plan right now is to launch a few boats tomorrow and Friday as the weather looks to be favorable!

We launched our first boat of the season yesterday. Things went smoothly. The level at the dam complex continues to drop, so the DNR is going to start removing pumps. This means the river speed should continue to slow. We will start planning the schedule for the rest of launch season. The river closure has been extended until May 15th, and a NO WAKE order is in effect for the lakes.

We have reached 18 inches below the dam! The river here looks like it has slowed slightly. We are going to attempt our first boat launch of the season tomorrow afternoon, as long as nothing changes between now and then. Still a little cool for air temps going into early next week. It does look like it will start warming up towards the end of next week. If everything goes well tomorrow and conditions continue to improve both with air temps and water speed, we will begin launching on a regular basis!

Making progress!! I have been told that once the water level is 18 inches below the dam the DNR will commence scaling back the amount of water being moved through the complex(removing pumps, putting the regulating gates back in the spillway etc). This is good news for us as that should start slowing the water flow here at the marina. Levels on Mullett lake, Burt Lake, Indian River etc still remain elevated and could take another 30-45 days to come down. I will continue to monitor the pumping operations at the dam, and water conditions here. We hope to start launching boats sometime around May 18th. That is just a goal, not set in stone. Keep your fingers crossed and thing dry!

We have officially been removed from the evacuation phase model! Water levels at the dam are dropping daily, water levels south of the dam are dropping also just no where near as much. We are still going to be experiencing faster currents here at the marina. I do not have "official" numbers, but have been told they are releasing up to 1 Billion gallons of water per day through the dam complex! All of that water is passing right by our facility. Please be patient as the weather will eventually start to warm up and the urge to get your boat in the water will increase. However with that much water coming by our sea wall it is not safe to launch boats. As soon as we feel it is safe for our employees and the boats we will get to launching, I promise!

The water at the dam complex has dropped to 12.96 inches below the top. The State Street draw bridge has passed inspection and is now open to traffic again. The water levels in the rivers and lakes south of the dam are still very high and we are not seeing measurable daily drops like at the dam complex. With the amount of water out there I am sure it will be a while longer before we start to see any drop there. We do have rain in the forecast, it looks like several days worth over the next week or so. Let's hope we don't get enough to lose ground on the water levels! The speed of the water here at the marina remains unchanged, very fast and doing crazy things. Some areas look like the water is boiling! We will continue to evaluate the ability to launch boats, however right now we do not have a safe place to put boats even if we could launch. With the drawbridge now down that adds another factor to our launching boats. It sounds like DBBC will be getting the buoys for their channel in place soon and plan on opening May 1st for boats. I have not heard any updates on when the Bois Blanc Ferry will start running for the season. I did see this morning that a fuel barge was in the river so that is promising. We are now open and allowing customers to come in and work on boats. If the water levels raise we will reevaluate and make changes as we feel necessary. We have received clarification from the U.S. Coast Guard, that the northern part of the Cheboygan River from the dam complex to Lake Huron is NOT affected by the river closure. We are still experiencing very high water flow and fast current. The river speed still remains our primary concern for launching boats. We will continue to monitor and update as new information comes available.

Water levels are holding, the dam is currently 8.76" below the top. The Coast Guard has CLOSED the Cheboygan River below and above the locks to the mouth of Mullett Lake as well as the black river up to the Alverno Dam. There will be a containment boom installed in the Cheboygan River in the area of The Forks Boat Launch. This should catch any debris floating down the river towards the dam complex. We do not know how long this river closure will be in effect.

What does that mean for us here? As long as the Coast Guard has the river from the dam complex to Lake Huron closed we cannot launch boats. So until the river is reopened and the water flow is reduced at the dam complex we are in a holding pattern for the kick off of launch season. I will continue to update our customers as we get new information.

Good morning, water levels here at the marina are holding steady. The river is still moving faster than I have seen it(in my 12 seasons here), and doing some crazy things as well. Yesterday we watched some small whirlpools around the fishing piers across from us. At one point around lunchtime one of those whirlpools had grown to take up almost half of the width of the river! Amazing the power and wonder of mother nature. It appears that they are gaining some on the water levels in the dam complex, last nights report showed 8.28 inches below the top of the dam. It has been fluctuating around 7.25-7.75 inches since the hydro was brought online. They have also set up 2 more 24" pumps for I believe a total of 4 of those. In total there are 17 pumps running along with the spillway, lock and turbine which last update said it is running at 93%, and the bypass gates were open also. We do have some rain in the forecast for Friday and Saturday, lets hope it only brings the 1/2" or less they are predicting. We are not out of the SET stage of the evacuation plan yet so we will continue to be CLOSED and will be restricting access to marina employees only. Hopefully that will change soon, as I know many customers are looking to come in and get work done before launch. Our hearts and thoughts go out to everyone affected by the flooding and ice damage on the inland water way. Please stay safe and we look forward to seeing all of our customers hopefully soon! Based on the information currently available to us, boat launching will be on hold for the time being. At this point, we are unable to determine how long this delay may last.
Several factors impact our ability to safely launch boats. Our location below the dam complex, combined with the depth and width of the river and the significant volume of water being released, creates unsafe conditions. The speed and force of the water make it difficult to safely control boats, and mooring vessels along the marina seawall would be challenging and potentially hazardous. While we have not seen significant debris in the water thus far, conditions can change quickly. There is also ongoing concern about possible overtopping or failure of the dam, which would pose catastrophic risks to any boats in the water along our seawall.
Additionally, there are reports of ice remaining in the Straits of Mackinac, and to our knowledge, none of the marinas on this side of the dam complex are currently open. We do not know when the locks will become operational again, so boats traveling above the lock will not have that option in the near future. Most, if not all, local boat launches are closed, with no reopening estimates available. Nearly every marina in the area is experiencing flooding, and many docks—particularly along the inland waterway—are underwater or damaged. Even if launching were possible, there is currently no safe place for boats to operate.
Due to the layout of our facility, smaller trailerable boats are also inaccessible, as they are blocked by larger floor boats. We understand this is far from an ideal situation; however, we are dealing with conditions that are entirely beyond our control. At this time, the best course of action is to hope for improved weather, that all pumps, equipment, and the hydro plant remain operational, and continue managing the historically high water levels affecting our watershed.
As new information becomes available and conditions change, we will continue to reassess our ability to launch boats and adjust our plans and schedule accordingly. Updates will be shared via email and posted on our page.
