We have officially been removed from the evacuation phase model! Water levels at the dam are dropping daily, water levels south of the dam are dropping also just no where near as much. We are still going to be experiencing faster currents here at the marina. I do not have "official" numbers, but have been told they are releasing up to 1 Billion gallons of water per day through the dam complex! All of that water is passing right by our facility. Please be patient as the weather will eventually start to warm up and the urge to get your boat in the water will increase. However with that much water coming by our sea wall it is not safe to launch boats. As soon as we feel it is safe for our employees and the boats we will get to launching, I promise!

We have received clarification from the U.S. Coast Guard, that the northern part of the Cheboygan River from the dam complex to Lake Huron is NOT affected by the river closure. We are still experiencing very high water flow and fast current. The river speed still remains our primary concern for launching boats. We will continue to monitor and update as new information comes available.

Water levels are holding, the dam is currently 8.76" below the top. The Coast Guard has CLOSED the Cheboygan River below and above the locks to the mouth of Mullett Lake as well as the black river up to the Alverno Dam. There will be a containment boom installed in the Cheboygan River in the area of The Forks Boat Launch. This should catch any debris floating down the river towards the dam complex. We do not know how long this river closure will be in effect.

What does that mean for us here? As long as the Coast Guard has the river from the dam complex to Lake Huron closed we cannot launch boats. So until the river is reopened and the water flow is reduced at the dam complex we are in a holding pattern for the kick off of launch season. I will continue to update our customers as we get new information.

Based on the information currently available to us, boat launching will be on hold for the time being. At this point, we are unable to determine how long this delay may last.
Several factors impact our ability to safely launch boats. Our location below the dam complex, combined with the depth and width of the river and the significant volume of water being released, creates unsafe conditions. The speed and force of the water make it difficult to safely control boats, and mooring vessels along the marina seawall would be challenging and potentially hazardous. While we have not seen significant debris in the water thus far, conditions can change quickly. There is also ongoing concern about possible overtopping or failure of the dam, which would pose catastrophic risks to any boats in the water along our seawall.
Additionally, there are reports of ice remaining in the Straits of Mackinac, and to our knowledge, none of the marinas on this side of the dam complex are currently open. We do not know when the locks will become operational again, so boats traveling above the lock will not have that option in the near future. Most, if not all, local boat launches are closed, with no reopening estimates available. Nearly every marina in the area is experiencing flooding, and many docks—particularly along the inland waterway—are underwater or damaged. Even if launching were possible, there is currently no safe place for boats to operate.
Due to the layout of our facility, smaller trailerable boats are also inaccessible, as they are blocked by larger floor boats. We understand this is far from an ideal situation; however, we are dealing with conditions that are entirely beyond our control. At this time, the best course of action is to hope for improved weather, that all pumps, equipment, and the hydro plant remain operational, and continue managing the historically high water levels affecting our watershed.
As new information becomes available and conditions change, we will continue to reassess our ability to launch boats and adjust our plans and schedule accordingly. Updates will be shared via email and posted on our page.
