The red-cockaded woodpecker has been part of East Texas forests for generations.

At I.D Fairchild State Forest, that means actively managing the land to maintain the open pine habitat the species depends on.

Practices like prescribed fire and thinning continue to shape the forest in ways that support the woodpecker and other native wildlife.
