Winning the Buy Box is the secret sauce behind performing well on Amazon. At least 80% of all sales on Amazon come from the Buy Box, and most buyers will never check other sellers. It's just a lot easier for them to click one or two buttons than to look at a comparison of all the sellers and then choose one.

So, for sellers, it's imperative that your strategy is focused around winning the Buy Box as much as possible. There are a variety of factors that go into this, but here are a few of the most important ones:

☑️ Pricing – Lower pricing (including shipping and handling) will always take preference to Amazon

☑️ Consistency of pricing – Inconsistent pricing, or big price swings will result in you being placed lower down the list of sellers.

☑️ Stock – Low stocks will result in you being moved down the list of sellers. A reliable quantity of stock that can fulfill orders will always be prioritized.

☑️ Account health – Various seller metrics, such as feedback, fulfillment rate, and defect rate will also impact your ability to get the Buy Box.

This concept plays out every day, on every team.

Managers who rely heavily on rules almost always do so because they don't trust their people to meet goals without those rules. They don't have confidence that their team can connect the dots between A and B themselves, so they just make the guard rails so tight that they can't miss.

Late Shipment Rate is another vital metric for Amazon FBM sellers to monitor. It may be more self-explanatory than some of the other metrics, and the calculation is relatively simple: an order that is overdue to be shipped by three or more days is considered late. The number of late orders divided by the total number of orders in a certain time period gives you the Late Shipment Rate for that time period. Amazon is committed above all to protecting the order experience for customers, so they expect sellers to keep a low LSR.

VTR (Valid Tracking Rate) measures the percentage of merchant fulfilled package that have a valid tracking number. Amazon has built such a large customer base because their customers know that when they order something, it will arrive, and they can track it along the way. For that reason, Amazon requires sellers to provide accurate tracking info to the customer for all merchant-fulfilled orders.

To calculate VTR, Amazon divides your total shipments with a good VTN (valid tracking number) by the total orders in a 30 day period (except for certain types of orders that are exempted from the calculation) to get a percentage.

Some orders don't apply to VTR, such as parcels that are heavy and bulky but not delivered with a carrier that integrates with Amazon, or packages that cost less than $10 and are shipped in standard USPS envelopes or First-Class Mail.

VTR is another way that Amazon protects customers from a poor experience, and for sellers that often use merchant-fulfilled orders, it's a very important metric to monitor.
