Today we are honored to recognize MV operators Kelvin Hutchins (R) and Ernest Wing (L) for 30-years of service at North County Transit District (NCTD). Both of these amazing transit professionals started their careers in 1992. Congratulations and thank you both for your service day-in and day-out over many miles and with many smiles from the riders you serve.

Today’s safety message talks about pre-trips and the importance of the proper tire tread. It says, “Every Pre-Trip Requires a Tire Tread Check”.

An important aspect of traffic safety for yourself, passengers, and others who share the road with you, is that you personally inspect your vehicle. A vehicle defect found during an inspection could save you problems later. You could have a breakdown on the road that will cost you time and money, or even worse, an accident caused by the defect.

Federal and state laws require that drivers inspect their vehicles. For safety, you should check tires for:
• Too much or too little air pressure.
• Cuts or other damage.
• Tread separation.
• Dual tires that come in contact with each other or parts of the vehicle.
• Mismatched sizes.
• Radial and bias-ply tires used together.
• Cut or cracked valve stems.
• Bad Wear, check the tread depth. No fabric should ever show through.
• Damaged rims.
• Damaged or loose lug nuts

A proper pre-trip is not only common sense for commercial vehicles, but it’s the law.

- Slow down in residential neighborhoods & obey traffic signs
- Drive below the posted speed & give yourself extra time to react
- Watch for children walking on roadways, medians, & curbs
- Look for children crossing the street
- Carefully enter and exit driveways & alleys
- Turn on your headlights to be more visible – even in the daylight
