⚓Boat Tip: Check Your Sea Strainers!

Your sea strainers filter weeds, zebra mussels, and debris from the lake before water reaches your engine, generator, AC, etc. A clogged sea strainer restricts cooling water flow, which can cause engines or generators to overheat, your A/C to stop cooling, and raw-water pumps or impellers to wear out prematurely, etc.

Catching it early can prevent a costly breakdown and save your day on the water. Before heading out, take a quick look. If the basket is full of debris, clean it before starting your trip. It only takes a minute and could save you a very expensive repair.

⚡Quick Electrical Fix = Back on the Water! ⛵

A customer contacted me after the batteries on their 40’ sailboat stopped charging. Diagnostics showed the battery charger was working properly (13.5V output), so I dug a little deeper.

🔎 The culprit? Two blown 30-amp fuses, likely caused by a power surge from the recent storms that had rolled through the area.

✅ Both fuses replaced
✅ Battery charging restored
✅ DC power fully stored on the boat

Another electrical issue solved, and this sailboat is catching wind again! ⚓

⚓Dead in the water? Not for long—another twin-engine rescue!
A twin MerCruiser-powered boat was stuck at the marina with both engines refusing to start.

🔧Engine #1: A loose power connection at the starter was causing an extremely slow crank. Tightened the connection and it cranked like new.

🔧Engine #2: Replaced a failed starter, but the engine still wouldn’t fire. After tracing the electrical system, I found disconnected ignition wires preventing power from reaching the fuel pump. Reconnected the wiring, restored power, and the engine fired right up.

Sometimes it’s not one problem—it’s several. Careful troubleshooting saves time, money, and unnecessary parts.
Both engines are now running strong and out on the water! 🚤

🔧Cleaning carburetors: A rough idle isn’t always an ignition problem.

This customer came in with one outboard that had a persistent low-idle miss. He had already replaced the spark plugs, plug wires, and the fuel filter, but the problem persisted.

After removing and thoroughly cleaning all four carburetors, debris was found to be restricting the tiny fuel passages. Once reinstalled, each carburetor was synchronized using vacuum balance gauges to ensure they were pulling equal vacuum.

Result: Smooth idle, better throttle response, and both engines running the way they should.🚤

⚓ One engine mysteriously shuts down… here’s why.

After recently resolving a hydrolock issue on this twin-engine powerboat, both engines started and ran well. But about 15 minutes later, one engine suddenly died. After systematically testing the ignition system, I traced the problem to moisture inside the distributor that had caused the ignition module to corrode and fail. Replacing the damaged components had both engines running reliably again and the owner was back to enjoying the lake.

Keeping an eye out for the small problems can prevent the big ones.

While diagnosing a customer’s hard steering issue, these raw water intake hoses were found to be badly cracked. Although they hadn’t failed yet, the deterioration was severe enough that they needed immediate replacement. The owner was notified, and new hoses were ordered before they could become a much more expensive and potentially dangerous problem.

These hoses are critical parts of an engine’s cooling system, in addition to AC systems, heads, generators, etc. Over time, heat, vibration, age, and exposure to the marine environment cause the rubber to dry out and crack. If a hose fails, it could allow a significant amount of water into the boat, potentially leading to engine damage, loss of cooling, flooding, or in severe cases, even sinking.

A good rule of thumb: Inspect raw water intake hoses every season and plan to replace them approximately every 7–10 years, or sooner if you see cracking, swelling, soft spots, or corrosion around the clamps. Boats used frequently or kept in harsh conditions may need replacement even earlier.

🚤 No-Start Diagnosis: Sometimes the Problem Isn’t the Starter…

This twin-engine powerboat wouldn’t start. The engines would only turn over slightly, which suggested the starting system wasn’t the culprit. After removing the spark plugs, water was found inside several cylinders—a classic sign of hydrolock. By cranking the engine with the spark plugs removed, the trapped water was safely expelled from the cylinders. Once the water stopped spraying out, new spark plugs were installed, and both engines fired right up.

The root cause? A design flaw allowed rainwater to funnel into the carburetor, pass through open intake valves, and slowly fill the cylinders while the boat sat.

💡 Why this matters: Hydrolock occurs when water enters a cylinder, preventing the piston from completing its stroke. Attempting to force a hydrolocked engine to turn over can cause severe internal engine damage, including bent connecting rods.

Every no-start condition has a cause. Careful diagnosis—not guesswork—saves time, money, and unnecessary parts replacement.
