The Chicago Housing Department is pleased to announce that the Section 8 Rental Assistance Program will be taking all applications effective July 1, 2023. Section 8 provides rental assistance to low-income households, including individuals, families, and senior citizens and those who were affected by COVID 19.

Interested households should start applying no later than 27, June, 2023.

The CoPHD last took applications in October 2014 when over 25,000 households applied. With this waiting list opening, the CoPHD will conduct a random computerized system to select 15,000 Illinois households to be placed on the waiting list for rent relief.

If you need help or you have any questions on how to complete your application or apply for your benefit including disabled households for the Section 8 ERA program, please send a message to us. Monday-Friday between the hours of 7:30 am and 6 pm.

Emergency Rental Assistance Program
(ERAP) offers rental assistance to eligible households impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. ERAP is available for eligible households that may receive up to $2000 per month in rental assistance. Total assistance may not exceed 18 months or $36000
Effective April 1, 2023, ERAP is available only as rental assistance. New eligible applicants may apply for past-due (arrears) and up to three months of future rent assistance. utilities include electricity, gas, water and home energy costs only. What does emergency rental assistance cover?
The federal ERA Program allows local programs to cover rent, utilities, and home energy costs. This includes electricity, gas, fuel oil, water and sewer, and trash removal. If your landlord normally pays for utilities or home energy costs, these are counted as part of your rent.
Rental assistance may also cover:
Reasonable late fees (if not included in your rental or utility debt)
Internet service to your home
Moving expenses and other rental-related fees (such as security deposits, application fees, or screening fees) for families who have
to move
Some programs may also provide housing counseling, case management, legal representation, and other housing stability Services.
