The Florida manatee is a gentle giant of coastal Florida, lumbering in warm shallow waters during the dry winter months and reaching vast distances in the Gulf of Mexico during the warmer summer months. Designated as the Florida state marine mammal, many people hope to catch a glimpse of one, but their way of life is often veiled in mystery and legend. In seaman’s lore, they were often mistaken for mythic mermaids.
The manatee is a large aquatic mammal found in saltwater environments around Florida. They are described as pudgy grey animals with rounded nose, flippers, and paddle-like tail, but they are surprisingly agile as they have been viewed somersaulting and playing in the water. Manatees are covered in an aquatic version of fur known as pelage, a substance thought to help prevent the growth of algae that afflicts the slow-moving organisms in saltwater environments. They are pretty large, growing up to 15 feet long. The average manatee is approximately seven to nine feet long and may weigh up to 1,800 lbs! Females tend to be the larger of the species, with an average female weighing 1,000 lbs, and males averaging 750 lbs.

Your experience begins with a naturalist led boat tour into Everglades National Park’s 10,000 Islands, followed by a kayak tour. Few visitors get to experience one of the most beautiful natural areas in Florida. It is a beautiful part of our planet and like no other.
Depending on the season and the day's conditions, you may encounter a variety of wildlife – dolphins, manatees, stingrays, sea turtles, bald eagles, ospreys, herons, egrets, roseate spoonbills and many different species of fish and shore birds.
