Heading to the lake this Labor Day weekend?

Before you pull out of the driveway, give the trailer a quick once-over:

Tires & tire pressure
Trailer lights
Safety chains
Winch & tie-down straps
Wheel bearings
Bunks & mounting hardware

And once the boat is in the water, take one extra minute to look over the empty trailer.

Check for worn bunk surfaces, loose hardware, soft boards, exposed fasteners or anything that just doesn’t look quite right.

It’s a lot easier to catch a small problem before it turns into a headache at the ramp.

Safe travels, enjoy the long weekend, and have fun on the water!

Want a deeper look at what to check on your trailer bunks?

When's the last time you REALLY looked at your boat trailer bunks?

Not from five feet away with the boat sitting on top of them.

We mean the next time the boat is in the water:

Check the surface
Press on the boards
Look at the brackets and hardware
Check the alignment
Look for trapped moisture and debris
Pay attention to worn spots

Your bunks support your boat every mile down the road — and a lot of problems are much easier to deal with when you catch them early.

This week's Bunks & Banter covers 7 boat trailer bunk maintenance tips every boater should know.

Boat trailer carpet has been around for a LONG time.
And for years, most boat owners never really questioned it.

Wet carpet? Normal.
Sand and debris stuck in it? Normal.
Replacing it every few years? Just part of owning a trailer.

But just because something has always been done a certain way doesn't mean there isn't a better option.

That’s exactly why products like Gatorbak exist.

No carpet. No waterlogged bunks. No tearing old carpet off and stapling new carpet back on.

Sometimes the best upgrades are the ones that eliminate a job you never wanted to do in the first place.

Discover Gatorbak—the original non-marking synthetic boat bunk cover system. Designed to protect your boat’s hull with unmatched grip, durability, and UV resistance. Made in the USA and trusted by OEMs, dealers, and boaters who demand superior performance and peace of mind.

“It's plastic, so isn't it basically the same thing?”

Not necessarily.

That's one of the biggest misconceptions when boat owners start comparing carpet alternatives.

A plastic bunk board may replace the structural board itself.

A synthetic bunk cover replaces the carpeted contact surface while the bunk underneath continues doing the supporting.

Two very different approaches.

And there's another question that's even more important:

What's actually designed to touch YOUR hull?

Fiberglass?
Painted aluminum?
Raw aluminum?

Don't pick your bunks based on the words “plastic” or “synthetic.”

Pick them based on what they were engineered to do.

That's exactly why Gatorbak offers XP for fiberglass and painted hulls and E Plus for raw aluminum applications.

Every boat ramp seems to have its own unwritten rules.

Some are common sense.
Some you learn the hard way.
And some you learn by watching somebody else make the mistake first.

So let’s hear it…
What’s one piece of boat ramp advice EVERY new boater should know?

Bonus points if there’s a good story behind it.

If you were replacing your trailer bunks tomorrow, would you go back to carpet?

👍 Yep — carpet has always worked for me
❤️ I'm going to Gatorbak
😮 I've been looking at plastic/composite boards
🤔 I honestly don't know the difference

There are more carpet-free options available today than ever before, but they're not all built the same way or for the same hulls.

We just broke down one of the comparisons we're seeing boaters research more often:

Late summer is a good time for a quick trailer check.

By now, your boat and trailer have probably seen plenty of miles, ramps and long days on the water.

Before the next trip, take a few minutes to check:

✅ Bunks and mounting hardware
✅ Tires and tire pressure
✅ Lights and wiring
✅ Winch strap
✅ Safety chains
✅ Anything that looks loose, worn or out of place

It doesn't have to be complicated. A few minutes in the driveway can save a lot of frustration at the ramp.

Carpet-free doesn't automatically mean the same thing!

If you've started looking at alternatives to boat trailer bunk carpet, you've probably seen synthetic bunk covers, plastic bunk boards, composite bunks and plenty of other options.

But what's actually different? A lot more than you might think.

This week's Bunks & Banter breaks down synthetic bunk covers vs. plastic bunk boards and the things you should consider BEFORE putting either one under your boat.

Hull compatibility.
Support.
Drainage.
Debris.
Installation.
Loading.

Because the most important question isn't just:
“Does it have carpet?”

It's:
“Was it designed for my boat?”

How many times have you replaced the carpet on your boat trailer bunks?
Once?
Twice?
More times than you’d like to admit?

At some point, you have to ask whether you’re actually fixing the problem or just signing yourself up to do the same job again.

For fiberglass and painted hulls, that’s where Gatorbak XP comes in.

No soggy carpet. No re-carpeting. Just a bunk cover system engineered specifically for the hull you’re trying to protect.

Ditch the carpet. Upgrade the trailer. Go boating.
