This exquisitely detailed Mermaid Rug is 6 ft. in diameter. I made it about 15 years ago. It's some of the best "carpet carving" work that I have ever done.
The technique for creating the 3-dimensional relief is known as "carpet sculpturing", "carpet carving", or "bas-relief". This is done by hand using a special tool called a "carpet carver". This tool functions similar to barber's clippers. All these years, this beautiful rug has been rolled up in storage, and it has never received any foot traffic.
Over the years, the backing material and latex adhesive had dried out and needed to be replaced. So, I have removed the old backing material and will be attaching brand new material this weekend.
Then, I will have it either "bound" or "serged", which are 2 different methods for the perimeter edge of the rug, which is made of residential plush carpet. Both methods are border fabric which is sewn onto the carpet around the perimeter. The difference is that serging has an embroidered look and binding is just a fabric strip that is folded and sewn around the edge. Serging has a much nicer look, but it costs at least twice as much as binding. But, since this is such a wonderful piece, I will probably spend the extra money for serging.
I had always planned on keeping this rug for myself. But, I have decided to sell it for $1,000. If I shopped around for a wealthy buyer, I am sure I could get a lot more for it. But, I could really use the funds at this point. I could always make another one for myself some day.
