We did it!
Day 7, 35 miles, Dewitt to Clinton. We were ready to get off our bikes 🤣. I need a break, lol. Seven consecutive days of riding was a first for both Greg and I. I miss home, I'm ready to eat a big salad, and see my dogs. We biked from the Missouri river to the Mississippi river in 7 days, slept in a tent, experienced the hottest of days and the extreme humidity. Ragbrai is certainly not for the week at heart. We met wonderful people, saw beautiful countryside, witnessed true sense of community that made me feel proud to be an American. It was all worth it in the end. Thank you all for following us on our Ragbrai journey. Peace, love, and pork.

LOVE Dewitt
Day 6, 68 miles Anamosa to Dewitt. After surviving yesterday we knew were on the home stretch. The weather was amazing today! I actually was able to move around without sweating profusely. We had cloud cover all day. Spirits were high and all the towns were absolutely welcoming to us. Oxford Junction was awesome and the fire dept had a great pancake breakfast. We had more sweet corn and pie! Our stay over town today was DeWitt. I loved this town alot! There are about 8900 people riding Ragbrai this year. These towns need economic boost and Ragbrai riders are a blessing for them. The kids in the towns are in awe to see us ride through. I heard one kid say "there are bikers everywhere". So I had said that I didn't think I could eat pork anymore 😂, but.....I heard that we had to try a pork tenderloin sandwich, so I did....Greg did not. It was the BEST! I am a fan. Our Ragbrai is almost over and it has been amazing.

Thankful for trees and avacado bowls
Day 5, 87 miles Waterloo to Anamosa. Alarm set for 4:30 am left camp at 5'45 am. Today was really hard. The weather was hot 🥵 really hot and Iowa is not flat 😂. The route today was definitely a challenge. This would be the last of the over 80 mile days. Greg finally found something he could eat! He finally got a vegan avocado bowl. Let me tell you, it's really challenging to be vegan/vegetarian here. I didn't really take many pictures today because it was a hard day. I kept telling myself mind over matter, you can do hard things, just keep going. Something I keep telling my kids, so now it was my turn to listen to my own words. Along the route homeowners will set up rest areas in their yards and sell water and food items, usually for non profit causes. The United Methodist Church in Olin was our savior today. One of their parishioners had a stop at their house and they were raising money for their youth ministry. They had an amazing yard with beautiful shade trees, the best fruit pies, a sprinkler. We ate and took a nap under the shade tree. We made it to Anamosa. Now only two more days left in Iowa.

Sweet like candy
Day 4, we did 66 miles. Iowa Falls to Waterloo. Weather was 101 degrees but with cloud cover. God is Good!!! I have to tell you the humity here is awful. The only time we are not sweating is when we are on the bike with the wind. Sweat and spandex don't mix well, getting dressed in a tent is not fun, its.more like exercise. So we are learning alot about corn here on Iowa: some fun facts, 96 percent of Iowa corn farms are family owned and 1 percent of the corn grown here is sweet corn and the rest is for livestock. We are sore in places we didn't expect, like my arms surprisingly, my legs are fine. I had to try my first porkchop sandwich because there quite popular here. So I took about three bites and it was tasty but then I started remembering the smell of the Pig farms and that was the end of the sandwich. We had a prior American Idol winner perform for us in our Pork Belly camp, Maddy Poppy played. That was fun! Let me tell you though, the sweet corn here is amazing!!! It's sweet like candy.

Yeah for head wind!
Day 3 on Ragbrai was easy peasy compared to the last two. Only 55 miles with only 1000 ft of elevation, and Greg and I wondered where that was because it was flat super flat. We met some really nice people today. We met a couple that met on Ragbrai 21 years ago and boy did they have some crazy stories of what this ride was like before cell phones. We met an Iowa farmer that worked for Beringer Winery in the early 70s. We stopped and chatted with the folks from the Webster City rotary Club. We met two ladies from Dallas Forth Worth who are like us on Ragbrai for the first time. So, there are so many riders on the road when you stop and take a break it's a little unnerving to get back into the flow of biker traffic, Greg doesn't have this problem but me and the lady from DFW share in this fear and got a good laugh that sometimes it's takes 15 minutes to work up the nerve to mount the bike and proceed into traffic. People must be getting tired or maybe having too much beer because they were a lot of crashes and ambulances today. It was also extremely hot and uncomfortable Thank goodness it was a short day. We said a few times along the way, thank God for the headwind because at least it cooled us off. I think that's the first time we ever embraced the headwind!

Cookies and Pie
Day 2, Sac City to Fort Dodge, 69.2 miles, 1100 feet of elevation. Coffee in camp is great! Food in camp not so good. Greg and I think maybe our expectations are a little too high as we come from California. We are spoiled. Thanks goodness for homemade cookies and, ice cream, and pie from the locals. The Iowa State Police, Sheriff's, and first responders here are absolutely wonderful. They are along the route directing traffic, playing music and cheering us on. We have live music every evening in camp and last night the Burney Sisters played for us. Two young very talented sisters played county folk with some modern cover hits. There is every type of cyclist here at Ragbrai. From new riders to the casual rider and the elite rider. Every type of body shape and all kinds of bikes - from garage specials, to $10k show bikes, recumbents, tandems, and elliptical bikes, and roller bladers. We are looking forward to tomorrow It will be an easy day!

A day in the corn.
Our first day on Ragbrai, the diehards were up at 3:30 in the morning. I'm not kidding. They take cycling real serious here in Iowa. Greg and I got up at 5:00- you don't sleep much in tent city. As we started our ride the sun was amazing, a pretty red color lit up the sky. It took us 4 days to get to Omaha, Nebraska where we boarded the shuttle to Le Mars, Iowa. Sitting on the bike seat at 6:00 in the morning was the easiest thing that we had done in the 4 days prior. Day one would be the toughest of all the days on Ragbrai. 85.8 miles and 2600 feet of elevation. Greg and I were on the bike for a long time. The towns in between Le Mars and Sac City were amazing. They greeted us with warm welcomes, signs, balloons, and families out on the curb waving to us. It really was amazing to feel their hospitality and how much they loved us being here in their hometown. It was hot on day one. Really hot- soaking wet type of hot. Everywhere you look is corn. The nice thing is it's really green here The bad thing is the pig farms smell really, really bad. The type of smell that makes you question if you want to eat pork anymore. The people are spirited, fun, wild, I'll put it into perspective there's about a beer stop every three miles. There's more beer stops than food stops if you catch my drift. I honestly don't know how people can ride 85.8 miles in the hot sun and drink beer every 5 mi. I don't know, I think I would die if I did that. Greg and I are having amazing time. We feel like If we could survive day one then we could make it the rest of the six days, and accomplish our goal to bike across the state of Iowa. So far so good.

We have absolutely loved Nebraska. Mac's Creek was the best. Harvest Host for the win!
