Safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park 🐘

The absolute highlight of all my game drives in Uganda was seeing a leopard lounging in a cactus tree seconded by the herd of elephants that came through at the exact same time we were there πŸ†πŸ˜

I also had the LOVELIEST stay overlooking the edge of the Kyambura Gorge with and had the honor of being the first ever visitor to the brand new Kyambura Discovery Center. πŸŽ‰

Oh! I also stood on the Equator for the first time in my life. So that was pretty cool, too! πŸ“πŸ˜‰

Water safari on the Kazinga Channel πŸ“·πŸ›Ά

The Kazinga Channel connects Lake Edward on the border of the DRC and Lake George in Queen Elizabeth National Park and is ABSOLUTELY RICH with wildlife. πŸŠπŸ¦›

Some of my favorite sightings were the elephants (of course!), the tiniest baby hippo, dozens of Pied and Malachite Kingfisher, and massive herds of buffalo and solitary "losers" who have left the group. 🐘🐦

Safari is always a highlight... but somehow it feels even more exciting on a boat 😍

Exploring Kibale, Bigodi, and rural life in Uganda on the Fort Portal Plateau πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬

- long drives on red dirt roads passing through small villages, tea plantations, and jungles all while watching local life unfold was we drove by. 🍡

- a visit to the Bigodi community featuring a tour of their famed swamp, hand grown and roasted coffee, traditional grass weaving, dancing, and indulging in homemade banana beer and gin with the banana man himself, 🍌

- spotting all types of old world monkeys and learning first hand why this region is deemed the Primate Capital of the World πŸ’

- indulging in every minute spent at Kibale Lodge (one of the most beautiful lodges I've ever been!) with daily massages, an outdoor shower in my private banda, sundowners overlooking the volcanic crater lake, chatting with the incredible staff, and enjoying amazing food for every meal.🍷

Two nights here was definitely not enough! 😍

CHIMPANZEE TRACKING IN UGANDA πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬

Observing chimpanzees in the wild has beenΒ  a lifelong dream of mine (ever since I did my first biography presentation on Jane Goodall in the 5th grade!) and the experience absolutely lived up to all my wildest expectations!

- Bushwacking through the jungle with the excited howls and sporatic screams of the chimps reverberating in my ears.

- Watching groups of them swing through the trees and run through the undergrowth.

- Sitting with them while they groomed each other and engaged in various and relateable social behaviors.

I was so incredibly lucky to have the experience I did. Words cannot come close to properly describing how special it was to observe these amazing animals in the wild. They share 98% of our DNA and are truly so human-like.

A new life highlight has been added to my memories. My 10 year old self would have lost her damn mind. πŸ’•

Yes - I did it all on crutches with a freshly torn ACL. A huge thank you to my amazing team who made it all possible: my guide, Tony,Β  Ranger Janet, and my personal porter, Denis, who carried my backpack,Β  managed my crutches, and kept me from falling too many times to count.

Kigali, Rwanda πŸ‡·πŸ‡Ό πŸŒβ˜•οΈ

My first visit (of hopefully many!) to this culturally rich city in the land of a thousand hills -- three days filled with single origin coffees, supporting women owned businesses, trying my first banana beer, visiting a classic milk bar, navigating the moto taxi scene, and paying my respects at the genocide memorial and museums.

a mossy, moody, & much needed weekend away on Vancouver Island πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

We couldn't make it back to Wisconsin for Thanksgiving this year and instead spent the extra long weekend roadtripping our way around Vancouver Island, trying our hand at cold water surfing, hiking in temperate rainforest, taking long, rainy walks on the beach, tidepooling, and just hanging out and enjoying excellent meals, drinks, and spending time by the ocean. 🌊

I can't say I recommend skipping holidays.. but Vancouver Island was the place to do it πŸ’•
