Tropical Storm Lala continues to strengthen and could reach hurricane strength as it approaches Hawaiʻi Island on Saturday, with landfall possible. A Hurricane Watch is now in effect for Hawaiʻi Island through Saturday.
Lala is expected to pass south of the other islands through the weekend, but heavy rain, flash flooding, and rough surf are possible statewide beginning tomorrow through the weekend. Please share the guidance below with clients as needed.
Guidance for Travelers with Upcoming Trips
Clients traveling to Hawai‘i Island this weekend should be aware of the Hurricane Watch. We recommend clients:
Check with their airline, hotel, or cruise line directly on that provider's weather-related change policy. Airports are open and operating normally, and there is no reason to cancel or postpone upcoming travel to Hawaiʻi.
Rely on official sources, such as the National Weather Service Central Pacific Hurricane Center (nhc.noaa.gov/cphc), rather than individual computer models or unverified information circulating on social media.
Watch for follow-up guidance from you if official watches or warnings are issued.
Guidance for Travelers Currently in Hawaiʻi
Clients on Hawai‘i Island should follow all instructions from hotel or resort staff and county emergency management now that a Hurricane Watch is in effect.
Clients on other islands should prepare for heavy rain, flooding, and rough surf this weekend.
Rely on official sources, such as the local news or National Weather Service Central Pacific Hurricane Center (nhc.noaa.gov/cphc), rather than individual computer models or unverified information circulating on social media.
HVCB is in direct contact with the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority (HTA) and county emergency management agencies statewide to coordinate any additional guidance that may become necessary.
