Having more flexibility with your time can completely change how you travel.

But only if you actually use it.

Here are 5 things I’d consider:

1. Watch the weather, not the calendar.

Instead of always traveling the same month, start with WHERE you want to go and work backward. The best time for one trip might be completely wrong for another.

2. Be flexible about what trip comes next.

Your bucket list doesn’t have to happen in order.

Maybe Japan makes more sense this year and Italy next year. Maybe you find a river cruise itinerary you love and move that trip up.

3. Consider trips that require more time.

Transatlantic cruises, longer itineraries, or combining two places suddenly become possibilities when you’re not trying to squeeze everything into a week of PTO.

4. Travel for what’s happening there.

Christmas markets. Tulip season. Wine harvest. Fall colors. A festival you’ve always wanted to experience.

You can ask, “When would we LOVE being there?” instead of “When can we get off work?”

5. Stop making every vacation THE vacation.

You don’t have to check 14 things off a bucket list every time you leave home.

Spend a week somewhere you’re curious about. Go back to a place you loved. Take the cruise because the itinerary sounds fun.

Not every trip has to be the biggest trip of your life.

One of the best things retirement gives you as a traveler is options.

Use them.

I plan river cruises for a living, and no, I don’t think everyone should take one.

Part of my job is figuring out whether a river cruise actually fits the way YOU like to travel.

Here are 5 reasons I might tell you to choose something else:

1. You want the ship to be a huge part of the vacation.

River ships are smaller and the destination is really the star. If you want tons of restaurants, big shows, casinos, and endless things to do onboard, you may be happier on an ocean cruise.

2. You love sea days.

River cruising is pretty destination-heavy. You can wake up somewhere new, spend the day exploring, come back for dinner, and do it again tomorrow.

If your favorite part of cruising is having nowhere to be, that’s something I’d want to talk about.

3. You want endless dining and entertainment choices.

There’s dining and entertainment onboard, but this isn’t a floating resort with 15 restaurants and multiple shows every night.

Some people love that. Others won’t.

4. You’re not that interested in the itinerary.

I wouldn’t recommend a river cruise just because you’ve heard it’s a great way to see Europe.

I want you excited about the places you’re actually going. The towns, history, food, scenery, castles, wine, Christmas markets, whatever it is that makes YOU want to go.

5. You need everything to go exactly as planned.

You’re traveling on an actual river. Water levels, weather, locks, and other conditions can occasionally affect an itinerary.

A little flexibility goes a long way.

I specialize in river cruises, but my answer isn’t always going to be, “Take a river cruise.” Sometimes an ocean cruise makes more sense. Sometimes a land trip does.

I’d rather figure that out BEFORE you spend the money.

There’s a big difference between “we want to go someday” and “we’re thinking 2027.”

“Someday” is easy.

Someday we’ll go to Italy.
Someday we’ll take that big cruise.
Someday we’ll see Alaska.
Someday we’ll finally take the big trip we’ve talked about for years.

But “someday” doesn’t give you anything to plan around.

“We’re thinking 2027” does.

Now you can start asking real questions.

How much should we budget?
How long do we want to go?
What time of year makes sense?
Is this something we want to do with friends or family?
What would make this trip really special for us?

And no, choosing a year doesn’t mean you need to book something tomorrow.

It just means the trip has moved from “wouldn’t that be nice?” to “how could we actually make this happen?”

I plan a lot of trips for people who have been talking about them for YEARS.

And usually, the first step isn’t choosing a hotel, cruise line, or itinerary.

It’s deciding that maybe it’s finally time to stop leaving it at “someday.”

So pick the trip. Give it a year.

You can figure out the rest from there.

What trip would you put a year next to right now?

Sailing along the Rhine can feel like flipping through the pages of a storybook. Castles rise above the river, vineyards stretch across the hills, and every turn reveals another beautiful view. From the comfort of the ship, guests with Riverside Luxury Cruises simply sit back and take it all in as Europe’s history and scenery quietly unfold along the water.
