I LOVE Disney History and geek out a little every time something random pops up, even if I already knew the story behind it. 😊
The Partners statue, one of the most iconic symbols of the Disney parks, was unveiled at Disneyland on November 18, 1993—Mickey Mouse’s 65th birthday. Sculpted by Disney Legend Blaine Gibson, with assistance from Rick Terry, the statue captures the essence of Walt Disney’s vision and his enduring partnership with Mickey Mouse.
Gibson, who had worked as an animator before becoming a sculptor for Walt Disney Imagineering, spent time perfecting Walt’s likeness. He studied photos, film footage, and even sought input from those who knew Walt personally to ensure the statue captured both his likeness and his spirit. The final design features Walt standing confidently, hand outstretched, as if welcoming guests to his world of imagination. At his side, Mickey Mouse looks up at him, symbolizing the legacy they built together.
One of the most touching details of the statue is Walt’s hand gesture. Gibson explained that it represents Walt showing Mickey all that they have accomplished together while admiring their location.
The Partners statue first debuted at Disneyland in 1993, standing proudly in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle. It was later installed at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in 1995, followed by versions at Tokyo Disneyland (1998), Walt Disney Studios in Burbank (2001) and Walt Disney Studios Park in Paris (2002).
Today, the statue serves as a beloved tribute to Walt’s dream and the enduring magic of Mickey Mouse, reminding guests that it all started with a mouse and the visionary who brought him to life.
