Retailers are going faster. But how?

More retailers are turning to third-party delivery platforms to offer customers same-day and even sub-hour delivery. Recent partnerships between DoorDash and retailers including Gap, Kohl’s, Barnes & Noble and Carter’s show just how quickly this model is expanding.

For retailers, the appeal is clear: fast delivery without building an in-house delivery operation.

But there’s another consideration: the last mile is still part of the customer experience.

A gig-based delivery model can provide speed and flexibility, but retailers should also consider consistency, accountability and how the delivery experience reflects their brand.

There’s more than one way to build a same-day delivery network. Hypr uses professional delivery companies and drivers — not gig workers — to help retailers deliver with greater consistency and control.

The first delivery attempt matters.

Research shows that approximately 20% of B2C deliveries fail on the first attempt. And every unsuccessful delivery can mean another trip, additional handling, higher costs, and less positive customer experience.

How can businesses avoid this? Proactive prevention. For retailers, a reliable delivery strategy isn't simply about getting orders to customers quickly. It's about getting them there successfully.

Reliable delivery starts before the order.

What if reliable delivery has less to do with speed and more to with what happens before an order is placed?

Research suggests that demand forecasting, inventory planning, and fulfillment readiness all play an important role in a retailer's ability to consistently meet delivery expectations.

Although customers may never see those operational decisions, they experience the results.

When inventory is positioned correctly, fulfillment is prepared, and last-mile delivery is dependable, retailers are better positioned to deliver on their promises and build customer trust.

Same-day delivery shouldn't be limited to the biggest names in retail.
