Last Sunday Champion trucks loaded-up & left Pocono to head 40 hours west to the Coronado Naval Base in San Diego, California. Wait what where….a Naval base…pretty epic weekend in NASCAR as the first ever race on an active military base.
The 3.4-mile course sits on the North Island which is ground-zero for the birthplace of naval aviation. The journey comes with a great sense of pride to be doing what we do here on the base & honoring the nation & the US Navy’s 250th birthday as they “Race the Base” this weekend.

And wait there’s more….to add to this historic weekend, Champion has again partnered with Kratos Defense (Nasdaq: KTN) for a deployment of two of tractor-trailers from Cornelius, NC to San Diego….autonomously. It is another step in the evolution of the frontier of transportation technology. https://lnkd.in/e4d_EVe9

Champion envisions one day a transportation plan that is more efficient & productive by eliminating the need for a DOT mandated 10-hour break in-route to a track that is outside of a 600 mile radius from the shop in Cornelius, NC. The goal would be to team the lead truck, and the follower truck would follow autonomously to keep the fleet rolling to ultimately reduce the travel & turn-around time between races. Champion is proud to be exploring this frontier with Kratos, a critical defense contractor for the military…so the fact that we can make the first cross-country run of this nature to a race on a military base, makes it even more special.

Lastly, this Sunday is also Father’s Day. To all our employees, the teams, & to the military personnel that hold the critical rank of “Dad”… Happy Father’s Day… both the military and racing are occupations that often separate us from our families…we all share in the hope that in doing so we’re making our families proud.

As part of race prep for this weekend, Goodyear took time to host a group (a select group based on looks) from Champion to tour the factory in Akron, Ohio...where all the race tires are made.

The tour was an eye-opening experience for our folks to see how the race tires get designed, built, and tested. It is an amazing process that showcases the crossroad of technology, ingenuity, & craftsmanship to build a product to withstand some of the most demanding applications & demanding customers in the world.

Thanks to Goodyear Racing’s manufacturing engineers & managers that were so gracious with their time. Speaking of demanding applications, it was something special to see the Top Fuel & Funny Car tires being built as well… “Big Mo” is what builders call the tire in the factory. Our hats-off to the builders of a tire that can withstand 11,000 horsepower & 10,000 lbs-ft of torque when the cars launch…seems like a defiance of physics.

All systems on Go-Status in Michigan with a whole new perspective & appreciation for the tires that Champion transports & handles each week.

Champion Tire & Wheel is absolutely gutted to hear the news of the passing of Kyle Busch. He was a legend in NASCAR and in his two decade career he made the sport better. We feel honored to have been able to witness his greatness for so long.

We work hard each week & do what we need to do to set the stage for fierce competitors like Kyle Busch. Doing that for so many years you can’t help but feel a connection to them & their competitive efforts….this news cuts deep through our organization.

Repeated time-n-time again at race tracks across the country-“Rubbin’, son, is racin’.” It was the line made famous by Robert Duvall starring as Harry Hogge in 1990 film, Days of Thunder. Duvall’s character of Hary Hogge, was based on legendary NASCAR crew chief Harry Hyde and his relationship with driver Tim Richmond- which was the basis of Tom Cruise's character, Cole Trickle.

The roots of NASCAR stock car racing in North Carolina really come alive in many of the scenes, one of which was when Hogge is talking to the chassis he's building for Trickle in an old barn in Mooresville, NC. Stand next to the trailer and you can almost hear him sayin’ "I'm gonna give you an engine, low to the ground... extra thick oil pan that'll cut the wind from underneath ya, see. It'll give you thirty or forty more horsepower."

Duvall has starred in a lot of movies but for folks involved in racing and fans of the sport….Duvall was iconic in his role in Days of Thunder. All systems on go-status in Atlanta. God Speed Harry Hogge.

The Brickyard 400 was not just another weekend for Champion. In route to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway we traveled over 120 miles autonomously on the I-70 corridor through Ohio & Indiana. The technology and systems to do this were provided by Kratos Defense (Nasdaq: KTN) & the tires by Goodyear (Nasdaq: GY). We thank them for their collaboration to put the whole effort together.
Our quest for wanting to do this is to eventually eliminate situations where our solo drivers need to take a 10-hour break in their travels to comply with the DOT logbook regulations. This downtime is hard on the equipment, the environment, and the drivers themselves. In situations where a 10-hour break is required, the thought is to team the lead truck and follower truck would follow autonomously. This helps keep the fleet rolling efficiently to get to the next race track or to Cornelius, NC, which is where we can provide the magic of what we do for our customers. Full implementation of the technology might be years away to do this but Champion’s quest is to be on the fore-front of the evolution, and have a another tool that our drivers could use to aid them in managing the complexities of the NASCAR circuit.
