One of our recent tours happened upon the Corolla Wild Horse Fund conducting sample retrieval as part of their DNA testing of the herds. CWHF utilizes the DNA to map the lineage, track family trees, and confirm the nearly pure Spanish Mustang ancestry of the Outer Banks wild horses. Meg Puckett, Director of Herd Management, took some time away from their field practice to chat with our tour group about the process.

"We use darts made especially for collecting tissues samples. They remove a very small plug of tissue and hair from the horses hip, and then that gets sent to the lab for analysis. We’re working on building an ancestry, and can also test for genetic diseases if we think that’s ever an issue. We’ve got more than 200 samples on file so far and hope to get the rest of the wild herd done over the winter. We’re about 1/2 of the way through them."

We are grateful for their tireless dedication in protecting, observing and preserving the herds for generations to come.
