We all know that eating right can help you maintain a healthy weight and avoid certain health problems, but your diet can also have a profound effect on your mood and sense of wellbeing. Studies have linked eating a typical Western diet—filled with processed meats, packaged meals, takeout food, and sugary snacks—with higher rates of depression, stress, bipolar disorder, and anxiety.

Eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, cooking meals at home, and reducing your intake of sugar and refined carbohydrates, on the other hand, may help to improve mood and lower your risk for mental health problems. If you have been diagnosed with a depression, eating well can even help to manage your symptoms and regain control of your life.

To set yourself up for success, think about planning a healthy diet as a number of small, manageable steps—like adding a salad to your diet once a day—rather than one big drastic change. As your small changes become habit, you can continue to add more healthy choices. You Are What You Eat!

“It’s Never A Race” Most people would probably agree that going 100 mph is foolishly dangerous and will very likely lead to a disastrous accident. The problem is that exceeding the speed limit by only 5 mph in the wrong place can be just as dangerous. That is why traffic engineers as well as Federal, State and local governments have determined the maximum speeds allowable for safe travel on the nation’s roadways. Consider this example of a pedestrian accident caused by minor or moderate levels of speeding:

A pedestrian walks out into a crosswalk with an approaching bus that is traveling at 30 mph. If the operator brakes when the pedestrian is 45 feet away, there will be enough space to stop without hitting the pedestrian. Now, increase the vehicle’s speed by just 5 mph, and the situation changes dramatically. At 35 mph and the pedestrian 45 feet away, the car will be traveling at 18 mph when it hits the pedestrian. A pedestrian accident at 18 mph can cause major injuries or even death. It’s Never A Race.

PPE, or Personal Protective Equipment. This important message is the kind that can save your life.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) refers to protective clothing, helmets, goggles, or other garments or equipment designed to protect the wearer's body from injury or infection.
The purpose of personal protective equipment is to reduce employee exposure to hazards when engineering and administrative controls are not feasible or effective to reduce these risks to acceptable levels. PPE is needed when there are hazards present.

PPE isn’t just a good idea, it’s the law.

Ask yourself, “What can I do to stay healthy?”

Evidence shows that some of the leading causes of death in the United States, such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, some lung diseases, and injuries, often can be prevented by improving personal health habits. Eating right, staying physically active, and not smoking are a few examples of good habits that can help you stay healthy.

Commit to a plan to make you healthier BY New Year’s Eve, instead of waiting until then to make the resolution.

Acting as Safety Supervisors, Road Supervisors are often forgotten as our front line when something goes wrong. If they observe unsafe behavior, we count on them to address it. If they encounter an unhappy customer, we expect them to get involved. When everything falls apart, they pick up the pieces and put it back together. If it hasn’t been said recently, Thank you.

The next time you see a road supervisor, please tell them “thank you” for keeping all of us safer. It takes a special kind of person to take on these responsibilities. Show them you appreciate their role and ask them to teach you a thing or two about what they do. Road Soup’s Rock!

Drowsy driving is a form of impaired driving that negatively affects a person’s ability to drive safely. Most people associate impaired driving with alcohol or drugs, but in this situation, sleepiness is the primary cause.

Drowsy driving is not just falling asleep at the wheel. Driver alertness, attention, reaction time, judgment and decision-making are all compromised leading to a greater chance of crashing. According to NHTSA’s National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Study (NMVCCS), drowsy drivers involved in a crash are twice as likely to make performance errors as compared to drivers who are not fatigued. In extreme cases, a drowsy driver may fall asleep at the wheel.

So if you feel tired, get up, stretch, and hydrate.

Blinding glare caused by a setting sun, by bright light reflecting off the roadway, puddles, the car in front of you, or even your own vehicle, can be potentially lethal, particularly when driving at posted speeds.

Glare is frequently cited as a significant cause of road traffic accidents, especially as the sun rises and sets, but the right pair of sunglasses can prevent it.

It’s not just a fashion statement when you wear sunglasses.

Keeping a safe following distance is by far one of the easiest, yet most commonly broken rules of defensive driving. Even if you follow every other defensive driving technique, you can’t possibly be a safe driver unless you follow this rule each and every time you drive. If you keep your distance from other drivers, you will almost always have an escape route, or will be able to take some sort of evasive action with ease. Even during higher speeds, if you maintain a large enough following distance, your chance of a collision with the vehicle in front of you is very small.

At a MINIMUM, during dry weather conditions, you should have at least 4 seconds of space between you and the vehicle in front of you. Do this by using a fixed object such as a bridge, tree, or even a crack or shadow in the roadway. Once the rear bumper of the vehicle in front of you crosses that object, begin to count… one-thousand one, one-thousand two, one-thousand three, etc. If you don’t make it to 3 by the time your front bumper crosses that same fixed object, you need to increase the following distance. Of course, being further away than 4 seconds isn’t only acceptable, it’s recommended. Follow me, but at a safe following distance.

If it happened, don't pretend it didn't. Sometimes we believe striking a curb with a tire, or a brush against a wall with side mirror is just vehicle wear and tear, and comes with the job. It doesn’t.

What this means is that you are using poor judgment and taking risky chances. The next time it could be a pedestrian you brush against with your mirror.

Learn from your mistakes, report all incidents and accidents, and commit to using LLLC. Don’t pretend it didn’t happen. Notify your supervisor and learn from your experience. Get your head out of the sand :)

The purpose of the stand down was to educate employees on safety after we identified the patterns involved in employee injuries. We believe that by educating employees on proper lifting, pushing, pulling, 3 points of contact along with training them to ask for assistance when they identify a situation that may exceed their capabilities, as well as implementing specific procedures for disciplining each employee, we can reduce our IFR. - Gabriela, SM San Jose
